In one of Houston’s most dangerous neighborhoods, you will find Sandro Gamez and Erika Emal Gamez showing humanity in the most extraordinary way.  It says it all in the South Side Street Dogs Mission Statement. “Changing lives through action and awareness.”

This amazing organization accepts only street dogs into their program that are located along their feeding routes in the areas of Sunnyside and South Union, provided they have both the fosters and funding available.  They don’t pull from shelters or accept surrendered animals from the general public. Their’s is a mission focused on , as the website shares, “working to raise a sense of compassion through education, awareness, and setting an example of humane human to human/human to companion animal coexistence by our presence in the field.”

This video is thought-provoking for a couple of reasons.  First, that Sandro and Erika, through SSSD outreach, provide the truly compassionate service of washing a homeless man’s mangy dog.  They treat both the animal and human with respect and it shows in both recipients.  Second, the homeless man, himself, doing what he can to provide for this mama dog, clearly wanting to protect and feed and do whatever he can for the animal, is a demonstration of love and humanity at its very core.
