Huntsville Animal Services in Alabama is in dire need of families to adopt as many animals as possible.  They are extremely overcrowded, and have even begun denying any pet surrenders. at this specific shelter.  Hopefully, the situation can be solved before things get worse and the shelter starts looking at euthanasia as an option.  Can you help?  If you can’t adopt, please at least share!

“Right now we have an influx of dogs, trying to get them all adopted,” said Stephany McBride.  McBride is the Humane Educator with Huntsville Animal Services.  “The other day, we had an officer come in and he’s like, ‘I don’t have a kennel to put my dog in,’ that he just brought in as a stray.  So, we’ve got to make room, we’ve got to move the dogs.”

Over the next two days, the shelter estimates that they need to adopt out 20 to 30 dogs if it’s going to be able to resume business as usual.  No one there is really too sure why, but lately it just seems as soon as one dog gets adopted out, there are two to three more waiting in line for a space.  As one could imagine, after a while this can be a really big issue.

“To be comfortable, to make room to be able to not have to euthanize because that really is our last resort,” said McBride.  “We really do not want to have to go there.  Just in the past little over a year, we’ve kept it above 90 percent and it’s been hard.  It’s a push to keep above that 90 percent.”

If you live in the Huntsville area, the shelter is located at 4950 Triana Blvd SW, and the zip code is 35805.  The shelter is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  The adoption fees for older dogs is only $35.00, and the adoption fee for puppies around six months old is only $50.00.  Please consider adopting from here if you are looking to add a dog to your family.  It would be a shame if any of the wonderful dogs there had to be put down because there simply wasn’t enough space.  Remember, at Life With Dogs we support adoption first!
