The Netherlands is claiming that they have absolutely zero stray dogs now, and it’s all thanks to some good legislation, making spaying and neutering services free for its citizens, and some other really great outside of the box thinking.  This is quite a claim to be making, that’s for sure, but if it’s true than hopefully some of these things can be enacted in the US, and in other countries with a high stray dog population.

One of the more controversial laws that they have enacted pertains to a high tax being placed on buying a puppy instead of adopting an available dog from a shelter.  Obviously, this is an attempt to get more people to adopt one of the many dogs that are already in need of a home waiting at a shelter.  Yes, a new puppy is adorable, but the senior dog at your local shelter needs a good home just as much as that puppy does.

If you’d like to see more of the exact laws and how they work and are enforced, you can click here to be taken to a document explaining the research used to get the Netherlads to where it is today with its stray population.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could work on something like this multi-part plan being worked on in the Netherlands?  Is there anything that you know your local lawmakers are doing to help with the stray dog epidemic here in the US?  Are YOU doing anything to help?  Share your stories with us here in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.
