We all love to share during Thanksgiving, but when it comes to our dogs (even the ones with the most pathetic “I’m starving” stares!) it’s important that we keep our people food on the table.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, eating turkey or turkey skin — sometimes even just a small amount — can cause a serious condition known as pancreatitis. Fatty foods are difficult for animals to digest and many foods that are safe for people can be poison for your pooch. These include onions, raisins and grapes.

Desserts are a no-no, too. Chocolate can be harmful and the artificial sweetener xylitol, a common ingredient in sugar-free baked goods — is to be avoided at all costs.

If you want to share a seasonal treat with your dog, there are some great recipes for homemade munchies (like this great one for Cran-Pumpkin Peanut Butter dog treats from the Cottage Market), or purchase something special that’s formulated just for pups.

And be sure to secure that tempting trash!
