Is your dog’s food bringing grain mites into the house?

A Washington family thought they had a serious problem with dust until they realized the dust had legs. It turned out to be thousands of tiny pests called grain mites that came in with the dog food.

A Washington family thought they had a serious problem with dust until they realized the dust had legs. It turned out to be thousands of tiny pests called grain mites that came in with the dog food.

“They’re so hard to see. That’s the worst part about it,” said Doug Froehlich of Tacoma, pointing to an adult grain mite moving inside a sealed Ziplock bag of dog food. “This is just the most disgusting thing ever,” added his wife, Carrie Froehlich.

For nearly a month, the Froehlichs have been trying to rid their home of thousands of microscopic mites that spread from jumbo bags of Purina Beneful, which they kept in the corner of the ground floor of their split-level home.

The family says they’d been feeding their two dogs Beneful for nearly five years and never noticed a problem, until they discovered the “dust” on Oct. 6. Purina says it will reimburse the Froehlichs for the two infested bags of dog food they purchased, along with the expense of cleaning up. When asked about similar customer complaints, Purina said the company sells millions of bags of pet food each year and reports like the Froehlichs are the exception, rather than the rule.

  1. Purina Beneful is just about the lowest quality food out there. On top of multiple sources of sugar, excessive corn, and artificial coloring, this food contains “animal digest” which is the saddest ingredient in the world. The animals processed can include road kill, downer cattle, sheep, etc, and animals euthanized at Animal Shelters. You don’t have to be a food snob to reject the doggie version of Soylent Green. This site has a good explanation of ingredients to avoid, and why: http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients

    1. Shel, those same ingredients can be found on MOST of the commercial pet foods sold today!! You really need to do your research and buy the best quality – regardless of price. It is very hard for me to afford the better foods for my hounds, but their lives LITERALLY depend on it! Thanks for sharing this info – I do!

  2. That is so gross! Makes me glad I don’t feed my dogs that kind of food but also makes me wonder about the food I do feed them. I just bought them a new bag, I’m going to be inspecting it VERY closely now when I open it.

  3. we faced the same problem with our purina cat food for the first time after many years of buying this bran…. i had to throw 3 boxes full of these disgusting dusty mites…..what is the problem??? any suggestion for better cat food??
