The Forgotten Dogs of Helena

Those who were outraged by an Arkansas mayor’s decision to set shelter animals loose in a town forest will be saddened to learn that the situation has not improved. Given that more than two years have passed, I fear that these poor animals may have been forgotten by the rest of the world.

Those who were outraged by an Arkansas mayor’s decision to set shelter animals loose in a town forest will be saddened to learn that the situation has not improved with time. Given that more than two years have passed, I fear that these poor animals may have been forgotten by the rest of the world.

Well meaning animal lovers are trying to feed the strays, but the writing is on the wall: if someone does not capture these dogs matters will only get worse. In an interview with News 3, Kate Freres with the Humane Society of the Delta expresses frustration at the lack of local resources available to animals – in fact, as you’ll learn, there are none at all.

  1. OMD, that is just so pathetic. How that mayor thought he was solving a problem is beyond us. Sheer Stupidity.

Woos ~ Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara

  2. @ Jenn: correction: it takes depth to be an a**hole. The idiot is so shallow he’s an a**rim.

Petition to have the Helena mayor released into the wild for two years. Naked except for a a collar.

  3. That has to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard? How does one person have authority to do something like that? I’m from Australia so we have state government that overrides local government, how didn’t any higher ranking being intervene and stop this from happening?? How absurd!

  4. I agree with releasing the mayor. How very stupid and “inhuman” he was! However, it never ceases to amaze me that ridiculous behaviors like this happen all too frequently. Thank goodness for those who were able to help them, and at least feed them.

  5. The sad truth is that as long as dogs are considered as anything other than the wonderful companions that they are, they will always be mistreated, misused and abandoned; it doesn’t matter the method or reasoning. Ultimately, it is a heart attitude that requires adjusting. Having said that, it is a shame that there is no law against stupidity…that mayor has an over abundance of it.

  6. Somebody in the town needs to look at the Stray Rescue of St. Louis model. Get some crates donated, recruit foster homes, and start trapping, spaying, and rehabbing these dogs! This is awful!

  7. What sort of idiot would do such an insane thing as letting these defenseless animals be on their own?. They should blindfold the idiot mayor, round him in circles, and throw him out on the road in the middle of nowhere. I detest animal haters….and more people should.

  8. The mayor should be arrested, of course. You can’t just set animals loose in normal circumstances. At least not in most places. He’s irresponsible and also probably somewhat evil. At least that’s what it sounds like.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  9. This mayor is a total nincompoop. Someone needs to audit the city finance books. I bet there is money there, earmarked for some Good Ol’ Boy’s Club Project. Poor dogs, this chokes me up.

  10. good heavens, I hope those kids who maimed the puppy are caught & their parents made to pay for the puppy’s care.
I can’t believe the Mayor was allowed to do that by the residents! He must have violated half a dozen animal cruelty laws!. What a poor excuse for a human. God bless the locals who are trying to take care of them.

  11. I agree with Jane. Follow Stray Rescue’s lead and get those dogs out of there. Or maybe someone could contact Best Friends for help. How could anyone think that letting those poor dogs loose in the forest to fend for themselves would be the best option.

  12. Wow, here some of us are fighting animal abuse and neglect and then there is a Mayor that does just that.
I dont understand how anyone can reason with this.
No surprise that people get away with running puppymills, abuse and neglect all the time.
2 years and this is still going on??
Somebody needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

  13. Why could they have not at the very least Spay and Neuter the animals before release! I am sure they have a vet! The mayor Needs to take a long walk off a very short pier, In shark infested waters. Those babies should not be in the situation they are now, never let go into the wild never left to fend for themselves this is Disgusting!
