37 Rescued Dogs Seized and Gassed by Brown County Dog Warden

All that remains of 37 dogs rescued by Ruth Wilders is a scattered pile of empty crates left behind after Brown County dog warden Andrew Dunn seized and killed them in the shelter’s gas chamber.

Wilders has been picking up strays and bringing them to her 5.5 acre property outside of Ripley, Ohio for years, and according to county officials she has been visited by the dog warden in the past for concerns about the condition of her dogs. But according to the Ohio SPCA, Andrew Dunn illegally seized 37 dogs from Wilder’s property and had them immediately killed in a crude gas chamber at the shelter a couple of weeks ago.

“They told me they were going to kill them all,” Wilder told local reporters. “I’m angry but I’m afraid to say anything,” she said. The SPCA says the shelter’s gas box is inhumane, and has sent a letter to Dunn and Brown County commissioners demanding that they stop using it immediately.

Dunn was not available for interview, but has stated that the dogs were underweight, and that he believed that some of them had mange, a contagious condition that if treated, would not normally require a dog to be euthanized.

The Ohio SPCA demanded that the shelter provide all records for inspection. They say Wilder’s dogs were taken without a warrant, and marked as strays – which would have allowed Wilder 72 hours for the pets to be reclaimed. The SPCA says they are considering taking legal action against the county over the incident, and members of the local animal rescue community are outraged over what they consider the callous murder of 37 innocents.

    1. In Shit Brown Co,the good ol’ boys do what they want, when they want and how.
They haven’t started gassing people yet but they do have a lot of “unsolved” homicides. Some even happened in the local jail where the inmate hung himself.Amazing.

  1. It is pretty horrible when it is the animal shelter people that dogs need to fear the most. They are suppose to be the ones to help not to destroy. While we know that county shelters are not no-kill shelters, you would like to believe that they do everything possible to NOT kill the animals.

  2. Ok, if the warden was so concerned about the dogs where was the phone call to the humane society and the SPCA asking for additional resources? Also, I must have missed it but, when did the warden say that he ran lab tests to determine if the mange the dogs had was the contagious variety or the non contagious demodex? I worked as a veterinary surgical tech. for many years and we had to take skin samples and inspect them under a microscope before we could diagnose which type of mange was present. Ninety percent of the time it was demodex; totally treatable and non contagious. I appreciate that this little county, like many others across American are very limited on funding. But, there are countless shelters that want to help, god bless them for their tireless efforts on behalf of homeless animals. All I see here is a callous individual in a position of authority who didn’t care about the animals under his care. For him, it seems, this was a quick way to rid himself of a headache. By the way, was it only me or did anyone else notice how the media report seemed to be biased toward the warden? It seems as though their entire report was trying to generate tolerance toward the warden’s behavior as though he had no other options.

  3. Totally unacceptable! For some reason shelters have stopped being about saving animals and more about punishment. I think everyone needs to get more involved with their community and find out where the hard earned tax dollars are going…if you don’t like what you see than work for change!

    1. Buddy, I agree 100%. It’s our responsibility to check up on our shelters and rescue organizations…as well as contact the local legislators with our concerns! I truly wish more people would do this! Thanks for your post!

  4. Sounds like the Dog Warden is on a power trip. I hope the SPCA follows thru with their threat and removes him from his position. He is no friend of the animals. We should all politely contact the SPCA and ask them to remove Dunn and put someone in his position that is willing to work with rescuers.

  5. UNforgivable. The Warden clearly had some sort of personal ax to grind with the rescuer, and unfortunately the animals paid the ultimate price.
He needs to lose his job AND the SPCA bring charges against the County. Change needs to happen, and it won’t if he remains employed there and if they don’t bring in the Law.

  6. This is not far from where I grew up. There have been many things coming to light recently about how corrupt the county governments in this particular region of Ohio are. It is absolutely maddening because unfortuntely, there probably won’t be much done about it. I hope I’m wrong.

  7. So horrific. Dogs are living in (alleged) poor conditions so the solution is to seize and immediately kill all of them?

How can people not see the ridiculous nature of actions like this? If human beings are in danger in their home do we seize and kill them?

So outrageous. I hope there is punishment for those who are guilty.

  8. This guy should be jailed. He’s a petty government employee who overstepped his authority and murdered 37 dogs. How many others has he done this to? He probably threatens pet owners a lot but they can’t speak out for fear or retaliation. A government employee can get away with a lot of bad stuff before they get caught. His department and managers should also be charged.

  9. How can go in and rescue these poor dogs only to rush back and put them down. Where was their second chance. This warden has no compassion and needs to get a differant job.. BOO to you warden

  10. How barbaric to murder with a gas chamber, reminiscent of Hitler. The warden should be arrested for cruelty and the gas chamber destroyed. This is the 21st century about time you caught up with it and humanely euthanised animals. RIP little dogs

  11. Why? There was absolutely no reason for that. Ruth Wilders was actually trying to take care of these dogs!! Dunn takes them from her and KILLS them??

    1. No, No, No, That breaks my heart. Dogs have personality they are smart, and to kill them like this is horrible. They could have found homes for them.

  12. This type of story has become all too common lately. The job of ‘dog warden’ or ‘animal control officer’ seems to draw a lot of cruel people who enjoy killing animals.

  13. DUNN NEEDS TO BE STUFFED IN THE GAS CHAMBER HIM SELF, THIS IS SO WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS , HE NEEDS TO LOSE HIS JOB LIKE YESTERDAY HES NOT DOING HIS JOB AND GOD KNOWS HOW MANY OTHER PETS HE HAS KILLED THIS COUNTY NEEDS TO FIND A NEW DOG WARDEN, PLUS CHARGES OF 37 CRUELTY NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT AGAINST HIM, GET HIM OUT NOW AND CHARGE HIM WITH 37 FELONY COUNTS, HE IS SCUM OF THE EARTH AND HE SHOULD GET BURIED IN A PILE OF DOGGIE CRAP…

  14. Judge, Jury and executioner. This person scares me. Perhaps he would like to take his death chamber and go to work for the obama administration. Community organizing anyone?

  15. FFS mange is curable
yes its contagious but its curable but why is the woman with out facilities rescuing dogs fod God sakes he r property looks like dangerous one Ha OHIO Spca the ones that Murdered 3 mares in a seizure that was more aboput getting horses that we covet then actual rescue No wonder

  16. I angers me how biased that news video is! Like they want everyone to just go on with their daily lives and pretend like it’s a “fact of life”. Notice how they didn’t say whether the dogs were tested for mange, or if the Dog Warden just decided they did, since he immediately had them killed. And they keep mentioning how he didn’t have the resources to care for them, well then why did he illegally seize them!? Why wouldn’t he contact local shelters and the Ohio SPCA first, and THEN legally take the dogs with help!? This was so unecessary, and then on top of it all, the local news station just glosses over it like it’s okay that it happens all the time. : (

  17. I am a resident of this county and this enrages me. I personally know this individual and he really is a scum bag in lots of ways. He doesn’t deserve this position. He’s never even really liked animals that much, at least he’s never showed it. If you don’t care for something, then don’t go into a career it involves.ANDREW DUNN F*** YOU! I HOPE YOU BURN IN HELL!

  18. to say the very least Jail taking things into his own hands stealing trespassing the list goes on and on i dont know if i can watch video so lot i dont understand did he remove these animals him self i would have shot him
    slowly
