A brave and dedicated dog lover from the UK is making headlines for fighting off three armed thieves who tried to steal his two boxer puppies.

The incident happened as Richie Gaston made his way home from his Inverness pub, The Phoenix Bar. Gaston was walking his dogs when he felt one of the leads get lighter and looked up to see a man lifting up his 10-week-old, Rascal. He knocked the dog-napper to the ground before another thug appeared and tried to snatch his other pup, Bruno.

Gaston threw a punch that knocked the criminal down. Then a third dog napper appeared, flashing a knife. “Then another guy came at me and I saw the glint of a blade,” Gaston said.

Determined to protect his pets, Gaston kicked the knife out of the punk’s hand before losing his footing. “I slipped and he started booting me on the head. I pulled the dogs towards me as they were terrified but then I flipped. I jumped to my feet, grabbed the guy and threw him head first over a fence. They all ran away.”

After a thorough and proper beating at the hands of the loyal dog guardian, the battered dog nappers fled, leaving Rascal and Bruno safe in the arms of their defender.

Gaston is convinced that the thieves knew what they were after. “There’s no doubt the pups were targeted. They’re only 10 weeks old, are 100 per cent pedigree and are absolutely gorgeous. They’re worth about £500 each and I’ve no doubt the thieves were after them.”

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to contact police. Our inquiries are ongoing.”

  1. I am so proud of Richie Gaston for protecting his babes. I, too, used to have Boxers; a mother and her pup; which I raised both from newborn and both had the registered bloodline. Except my story is different because a young guy who lived in the apartment behind mine, broke into mine one day and killed the pup and if I hadn’t come home when I did, he would have killed the mother. Needless to say, he got away with break and enter, and animal cruelty causing death. I still miss my Boxers very badly; lost mama 2 years ago-she was 13. Baby was only 6 when killed a few years ago. It’s nice to see that some people actually care about animals and how far a person’s love for their pet can go.

  2. Wow….that devoted dog owner broke bad and turned into the thieves worst nightmare. Good for him. Thank goodness he and the puppies are ok.

  3. A man was harassing me and my boxer puppy (6 months) at a dog park once and I quite frankly, surprised myself. He quickly got very acquainted with the term “Mamma Grizzly”. I hate confrontation and if not for me feeling the need to protect my pup, I probably would’ve just run away or something. Don’t mess with my furbabies.

  4. Richie Gaston you are my hero! I am so happy that you were strong enough to fight off those losers and protect your fur babies. Some day when they grow big they will pay you back exponentially.

As for the losers, I hope they find them soon and put them away for a long time. And, when they get out, part of their restitution should include long term community service such as cleaning up dog poop at all local dog parks and kennel cleaning at local shelters!

  5. The world needs so many more people like u, u r a true hero to the doggie kingdom, bless u for fighting off those idiots. I am so glad that u and your babies are safe. God Bless.

  6. Good for you Ritchie, my mom & dad would wrestle thieves to the ground too, to save me and my home-dogs

  7. Ok, I get the protectiveness, but I am still amazed that people in England still raise this breed. The bull dog was bred during a dark time in England’s history, before the age of civility, in the 1800’s. It was bred to kill bulls in a pit. I’m not making this up; read your history. Needless to say, it was a cruel sport. A society, named the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), was started by a man, William Wilberforce, the same English Parlimentarian who led the legislative movement for the abolition of slavery to address such issues as these. That is a real Christian, and a hero….

      1. Boxers are the sweetest, cutest dogs. I’ve got 4. And as for Bulldogs and Pitbulls, there are just as wonderful….. It’s the owners that are the problems, there are no problem dogs.

  8. I’m thankful you were not hurt and the punks got what they deserved. Thank goodness your dogs had you to protect them.

  9. Richie Gaston you are a hero!!!!! I am so happy you were able to save your pups. I hope you took on the bad guys because of your love for dogs and not that it is your intention to breed these pups and add to the pet overpopulation.
