Topeka, Kansas resident Mark Harrison is being hailed a hero after saving a family pet from a house fire.

Harrison and his family were driving home from church on Easter Sunday when they noticed smoke coming from a home located at 3913 SW 39th St.  Harrison stopped his car while his children called 911.  Sensing imminent danger, Harrison did not wait the few minutes that it took for firefighters to arrive. Instead, he broke into the burning building and conducted a quick search for survivors. “I felt the glass and noticed the glass was hot…that’s the reason I went around to the back…just to see if there was something we could do.”

While no humans were home at the time of the blaze, there was a dog alone in the house. Harrison located it and quickly moved the frightened dog outside to safety, secured in its crate. He can be seen in a brief interview in the raw video footage included below.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

  1. There really is a silver lining to every storm cloud isn’t there!? What a wonderful Citizen. I’m sure the family is thrilled at the fact they didn’t loose there furry family member.

  2. I can only hope that someone would do the same for my dogs. If even just to let the out in the back yard, and increase their chances of survival. Material goods can be replaced, lives cannot.

  3. Don’t leave it to “hope” (remember Yoda said”there is no hope – there is doing or not doing”)I have briefed my neighbors (even to the point of indicating my preference for which door they kick in if they have time!) hoe to get my dog out. Let’s hear it for neighbors!!

  4. Truly a Good Samaritan – the kind we all hope would be around if ever needed.

  5. You did a wonderful thing! I’m certain that the poor frightened little dog is greatful! Bless you!

  6. Yes Mr. Mark Harrison you are a true hero! This family lost alot and had it not been for you it would have been even more devastating for this family to loose their little dog in that fire. I’m sure you will forever be their hero. Bless you.
