Nurses at an old folks home north of Vancouver got the surprise of a lifetime when they watched a white toy poodle fall from the sky.

As amazing as that may be, what is even more surprising is the fact that “Miracle May” survived the fall. She was turned in to the SPCA earlier this month after a bird of prey dropped her. Despite a few broken ribs she’s expected to make a full recovery, and in some ways, the bird may have done may a favor: shelter employees say she was a stray, and in rough shape.

“In addition to the claw marks on her back and the broken ribs she sustained from the fall, all of her nails were so long they had grown into her paw pads and her teeth were badly decayed,” said SPCA Sunshine Coast branch manager Shannon Broderick.

“We don’t know how long she had been wandering without care, but she was obviously very neglected.  It’s ironic, but this bird may have saved her life.”

Veterinarians are treating May’s torn footpads and broken ribs, but the shelter where May is recovering needs to raise $4,000 to cover the cost of extensive dental surgeries. Anyone wishing to make a donation can call 604-740-0301, or visit spca.bc.ca/sunshinecoast.
