East Providence police are working in cooperation with local rescue organizations to identify the person(s) responsible for abandoning a severely neglected dog outside the front door of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The RISPCA has examined the dog, nicknamed ‘Indy’ for Independence Day. He’s being treated with IV fluids and they say his chances of recovery are fair – the emaciated canine is only twelve pounds, and should weigh close to thirty pounds when healthy. As of now Indy still lacks the strength to stand up unassisted. RISPCA officials are fuming over the incident and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

“This was a cowardly act. A cowardly act to drop the dog off on the Fourth of July between 11 and 5 when you knew there were going to be fireworks at India Point, right here. This dog was all alone, didn’t have a leash. They didn’t have any identification. They just dropped him off at the front door,” said Dr. E.J. Finocchio, president of the RISPCA.

Police are working on leads but ask that if you have any information, please contact the East Providence police department at (401) 435-7600.
