Man Goes Homeless to Protect Dog

Peter “Ivory” Bowling has spent the last two weeks sleeping on the streets of LA. He has an apartment, but says he has forgone the safety of home in order to protect a dog.

Ivory has gone homeless to stay with Chocolate, a young pit bull he found near death in an abandoned apartment building. He worked with a rescuer to have Chocolate seen by a veterinarian. She was examined, spayed, dewormed and microchipped.

But Ivory’s landlord had denied his request to allow the dog to live in his apartment – despite the fact that other tenants have animals in the building. Ivory was not willing to let Chocolate go it alone, so he packed supplies and blankets, strapped them to his wheelchair, and took a stand, spending nights in area parks, under bridges – even fighting off a mugger who slashed him with a razor and stole his belongings.

Ivory is working to have Chocolate officially classified as a therapy dog, and is hoping that by doing so, he’ll be permitted to have her move in with him.

At the urging of dozens of concerned readers, we have started a chipin fund for Chocolate and Ivory. We’re working directly with the rescuer who is keeping tabs on Chocolate until Ivory comes home, and have direct contact info for his vet. Funds will be used to pay for Chocolate’s vet bills: any excess will be sent directly to Peter “Ivory” Bowling. Thank you for your compassion and concern.

  1. This dear pup will have long lasting emotional and mental-health healing for “Ivory”.
It shows how significant pets are in calming, relaxing and in giving us daily focus on other than our many worries and conerns.
Kudos to the Vet. as well, for being involved in caring for Chocolate.
    Well done!
I’m sure (at least I hope so) that a decent place will be found for both.

    1. There is a couple people myself and a friend bu right now we are at a standstill til we get contact info on both CHOCOLATE AND PETER will keep all of you updated

  2. If he is a responsible tenant, and if animals are currently permitted to other tenants, it is wrong of the landlord to deny him permission to have Chocolate in the building. However (and I could only read the article, not listen to the video) I see no place where it says that Chocolate was banned because of a breed restriction. Also, people are commenting that Chocolate is being discriminated against although he’s a service dog. Nowhere does it say that he’s a service dog. Maybe the landlord used to permit pets, but doesn’t anymore because they caused too much damage. Maybe Ivory is a troublesome tenant, so the landlord is just avoiding more trouble. Until I can see both sides of the story, I refuse to judge. As soon as I see a responsible, compassionate tenant who is being discriminated against, then I will get angry.

    1. Please read the article more carefully!!:
“Ivory is working to have Chocolate officially classified as a therapy dog, and is hoping that by doing so, he’ll be permitted to have her move in with him.”

      1. Therapy dog and Service dog are two different classifications. Just being a therapy dog (which does require certification) does not require the landlord to allow the dog in, whereas a Service dog (which does not require certification) is allowed per Calif state and US federal laws and regulations. It is a true “criminal action” for the landlord to refuse the presence of a service dog or in CA a service dog in training. (They can refuse a therapy dog)

    2. It’s not wrong to deny certain breeds. Actually, it’s responsible to deny pitbulls. This dog, Chocolate, is not only a pitpull but was found so no one knows what’s it’s capable of. I would not want to live next to such a dog ESPECIALLY with a child.
I have recently learned that there are a lot of places that will not rent to any large breed of dog because of their insurance policies.

      1. You are a very I’m sad to say ignorant person. What makes animals aggressive is not their breed it’s how humans treat them. Pitbulls were once known as the nanny dog often times looking after children. It’s only within the last few decades that they’ve been deemed dangerous by people like you. Also if you have a child that doesn’t know well enough to ask before going at an animal then YOU are the problem not the dog. Next time before commenting learn your facts before deeming a good animal bad because you can’t be bothered to look up truth.

      2. Your words hurt to say such thing about any breed. “such a dog” your ignorance is astounding. There is no such thing as a bad breed or an agressive breed. Pitbulls are bred not to bit humans plus they are the number one abused dogs in the country. Go to any local shelter. the shelter workeers love pits becasue if the sweet gentle nature. I love to talk to people who say such things to show you you have no idea what you are talking about.do not judge a dog on its breed. I as child i was attacked by a golden retriver mix who was unsocilazed, chained and untrained. if owners were not close by i do not know how bad i would have been hurt. they got dog off me right away and rushed to hospital. my wonderful pitbull was my first pit rescue out of hundereds, never attacked except with kisses, the public and media has made monsters out of them. So mcuh false identification.

      3. To the ignorant comment posted by “anonymous”: I can see why you opted out of posting your name. What’s responsible is banning people like you from speaking such hatred. Know the facts befor you speak MORON!!!

        1. HOORAY FOR YOU I ADVOCATE A LOT TO SAVE PETS FROM DEATH ROW AND THERE ARE LOTS OF PITS WHO ARE ACTUALLY VERY VERY SWEET DOGS THANK YOU

      4. AS I MENTIONED TO ARM THE ANIMALS I DO A LOT OD ADVOCATING TO SAVE PETS FROM DEATH ROW AND THERE ARE QUITE A FEW PITS THAT ONCE THEY HAVE MOVED INTO A MORE RELAXED ENVIRONMENT THEY ARE SO SWEET LOYAL LOVING DOGS. WHAT WE AS A GROUP NEED TO EDUCATE THE IDIOTS THAT IT IS NOT THE “BREED” IT IS THE PEOPLE. IT’S LIKE SAYING EVERY WEAPON IS DANGEROUS BUT IN REALITY THE WEAPON ONLY BECOMES DANGEROUS IN SOMEONE HANDS WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS. MOST PEOPLE I FIND AREOPEN TO LISTENING AND GETTING THE FACT BUT THE ONES THAT ARE CLOSE MINDED AND WANTS TO NE MISINFORMED IS THEIR LOSS IN MORE THAN JUST ONE IN A MILLION WAYS THEY WILL NEVER KNOW AND LET THEM STAY THE OUTCAST DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME AND ENERGY ON IGNORANT MINDLESS FOOL LIKE THAT

    3. your’e a coward it does not matter if the tenant is not nice he is only there to pay his rent the dog is the innocent victim here you you stupid ass cunt and coward you are so afraid to even put youre name on this i dont blame because with this tone you could have to maybe lock youre sI only hope the best for them both although this has been many years ago im sure they are safeelf in a closet from all the pissed off animal lovers that you are not so shut youre pie hole up!!!

  3. I don’t know the full details of this man’s situation, but I too am disabled, love Pitbulls, and live in a Pitbull Welcome State. My current apartment is NOT wheelchair friendly, but I could at least take the dog until other arangements can be made. I would even be willing to move into an ADA friendly apartment with this TOTAL STRANGER and his dog if he were willing to move to where I am at. I have left my contact e-mail if anyone knows how to get a hold of him directly to see how I might be able to help… I have limited funding due to my disability, but if others are willing to help in that respect, I can for sure help the dog if not both the dog AND its owner…

    1. Are you sure about this? Why would they do a story just a day ago if Chocolate is already gone? I can’t find anything to back this up…

    2. Bonnie, If this is not true and just a rumor, you are doing terrible harm to the man and the dog. People are trying to help them and may give up when they hear this. Please substantiate this claim. No offense, but it sounds like hogwash to me considering the video is only a couple days old.

  4. I wish both of you good luck…it seems that you are taking the first steps in getting your dog certified as a Therapy dog with a Mental and Physical Evaluation of yourself ! Even though you had to go to an extreme to fight for your friend …you know your dog is worth it. That is your family ….all the time , effort and nurturing her back to health . I am PROUD of you ! Not many of us have half the guts to talk openly about our challenges in life but look at the people that heard your voice ! KEEP FIGHTING and don’t let the Ignorance and smart comments of US the unknowing Bystanders get the best of you and your true friendship !

  5. I hate flat-apartments – they are not human or animal friendly.

This man should be allowed to have his dog with him, all the time.

  6. A very kind and courageous act. You are an inspiration to those of us who choose to respect and protect these beautiful creatures of the good Lord. God bless you Peter Bowling (and shame on your landlord).

  7. There is a post on Dec. 28th about the dog, Chocolate, dying. Does anyone know what happened to him to cause his death?

    1. I think this is just a stupid rumor. The Admin of the page has come on and asked people to substantiate this and nobody can produce even a single shred of evidence. Not even a link to the info. People shouldn’t spread this type of false information. There are folks out here who want to help this man and dog, and this type of thing could make them give up trying to help. I don’t mean you guys; you are just asking and wondering. I mean the idiots who started it.

      1. It’s absolutely false. I co-produced this video, and I dropped Chocolate off at the vet a week ago. A rescuer named Sasha Abelson walked Chocolate today. If you want to stay updated on Chocolate and Ivory with factual information, please like our Facebook page at Facebook.com/dogparkmedia. If you wish to help, please contact Sasha at [email protected]

        1. Thank you Leighton. I knew that had to be an awful rumor, why people would start crap like that is beyond me…stupid.

  8. i would choose my animals over any place he pays the rent and hes not asking for help with the dog i wouldnt listen to any landlaw never have and never would i got a small zoo off my own but i get un condilal love from them and its true love

  9. I think the dog dying is a rumor. Nobody has been able to substantiate this or even provide a legitimate source for this information.

  10. I am praying for Ivory and Chocolate, they deserve a very nice home, that I know will be filled with the love they have for each other.

  11. If anything this rumour could have been started by the evil landlord! I am so pleased some good people are looking into this. Don’t forget, whatever has happened that poor disabled man is in need of human kindness and comfort!

  12. Just want to make sure that the kind people who are taking an interest in this very sad case, are going to give some help to the disabled man, whether or not the dog is still with him. And, if the dog is not with him the man upstairs has a lot of explaining to do to me when we come face to face! Hmmph!

  13. this guy is so cool he defently should be able to have a place with chocolate chocolate is a awesome looking happy dog they should be together animals are way better then people mean people suck

  14. This man needs to get hold of The Animal Farm Foundation. They just kept a pit bull for a man where the city threatened to kill the dog because it was a pit bull. (Federal law trumps city law) In that case the dog was a certifited service dog but a pit bull which the city had an ordinance against. Choclate is not yet a certified service dog. This foundation might be able to direct him to the legal loopholes to get this done quickly. Good luck !

    1. Do you know where The Animal Farm Foundation is? Does anyone know of a foster that could take him temporarily until this poor man can find other housing.

  15. I live not far from LA. I think the main thing is to solve this by getting the dog certified as a service dog. He would need to go thru the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) classes (3 and certified) first and then the therapy dog program through the local animal shelter in our area. That way if the dog was certified, they could not legal stop him from having a dog, providing he is in section 8 housing or someone who is working with HUD.

    1. Getting a dog certified as a therapy dog isn’t something that happens in a couple of weeks. It will take quite a while to get the kind of certification that will entitle this man to “legally” authorize him to have it as a therapy dog. In the video, he says that “the previous owner of the apartment had a dog”. He doesn’t say anything about current dwellers having animals. The apartment complex may have been re-designated as “no pets” allowed. The man also said he is panhandling for money. If he was in the apartment, he must have some income. Why then is he panhandling?

  16. if this very brave and loving man can get chocolate certified as a service dog, he would not have to sacrifice his home for the commitment he has made to his sweet dog. God bless them both, and we must keep forwarding this dire situation to everyone we know. the more that back him up, the better his chances are of having his home and chocolate.

  17. I live in the LA area but there is no location given, not even his name. Does anyone have this info?

  18. WHAT THE HECK? People Chocolate is alive and well and I walked her today when I went to my vets to visit her. These false rumors NEED to stop!!! If anyone on this thread would like to donate food, supplies, toys etc to a VERY ALIVE DOG – please let me know. I am paying for her to be boarded at my vets until Ivory is back in his apartment – because I don’t want her to be on street. If you are interested in HELPING Ivory or his dog – feel free to contact me at [email protected].
THANK YOU for those of you who actually care!!!

  19. I’m one of the two producers of the video, and also the person who dropped off Chocolate at the vet about a week ago. She’s still safe and sound at the vet, and a rescuer named Sasha Abelson (who has commented above) is keeping tabs on her and is also in touch with Ivory. If you want to help, please please contact Sasha at [email protected]. She can definitely use your assistance, financial and otherwise. To stay updated on both Chocolate and Ivory going forward, like our Facebook page at Facebook.com/dogparkmedia. We’ll post updates there, and possibly more video of Chocolate and Ivory when they’re reunited.
