Shelter Dog Saves Teen From Sexual Predator

A St. Petersburg stray is being called a hero for helping to save a 17-year-old girl from an attempted sexual assault.

Mabeline

The teen was volunteering at the Friends of Strays animal shelter a few weeks ago and was walking Mabeline, a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, when she was approached from behind, grabbed by the hair and pinned to the ground. Unnerved by the element of surprise, by the time she attempted to free herself it was too late: her attacker had a weight and strength advantage that made it impossible for her to move. She struggled to escape and called for help.

That help arrived in the form of Mabeline. Sensing the girl’s distress, she approached the assailant with teeth barred, growling and barking. Despite her relatively small size, the big-hearted dog was threatening enough to make Michael Bacon, a registered sexual predator, turn tail and run. Pinellas County deputies would later identify and arrest him.

An unlikely hero, Mabeline is described as an “absolute sweetheart” and doesn’t fit the description of a typical guard dog. That said, her heroic deed may have caused fate to smile upon her: shortly after her heroic act she was adopted.

Her new owner, Mary Callahan, had no idea that her new four-legged friend had come to the rescue of a young woman in need, and was more than impressed – she was proud.

“I looked at my dog and I thought you are a hero,” Callahan explained.

  1. Go Mabeline. Dogs doing what the justice system fails to do. This guy should never have been free. How about we start euthanizing monsters like this when the jails become over crowded.
    Thank god for dogs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Wonderful story!

    “Mabeline to the rescue!”

Happy for the teen for being safe, happy for Mary Callahan and her fortuitous adoption of such a brave little dog, but happiest for Miss Mabeline our canine hero who has been rewarded with her much deserved forever home!

  3. People need to see that all shelter dogs and strays are not bad dogs ..they are just special dogs looking for a family to love. This is one of those special dogs.

  4. KLASSE!!!! … … ♥

  5. So awesome! 🙂 The dog didn’t even know the girl all that well, but she could clearly tell that the girl was good, that the assailant was bad, and that fast action was the only choice! Thank goodness for dogs; they so often go out on a limb for humans, even when they don’t have to! <3 <3

  6. Thank goodness your dog wasn’t devocalized like my dog was before I adopted him from a rescue group. One more reason not to devocalize a dog!Not only does my dog have trouble breathing he could never bark to let me know of any danger. Check out some of the youtubes on devocalized dogs. It is such an inhumane thing to do to man’s best friend. Great Job Mabeline!

  7. Amazing, I am so glad she has been adopted, but more importantly I glad this sicko didn’t get to hurt this girl any further, and glad he got busted. Hope he doesn’t get out ever to possibly harm another person!!!
