Maddie, a 10-year-old Border collie from Taunton, England, has been given a new lease on life.

Maddie and her owner, Nicky Prescott, had been high-level competitors in agility trials until Maddie began to have difficulty walking in 2009. Prescott was devastated to learn that due to severe Achilles tendon injuries, her dog may never walk again.

“She has always been a really active dog, so it was devastating when we were told she had such terrible tendon injuries,” Prescott remembers.

After two surgeries at the University of Bristol Veterinary College to correct the severely damaged ligaments, Maddie was fitted with a pair of custom-made orthopedic splint boots.

Orthopets, who specialize in custom fabricated veterinary orthotic and prosthetic solutions for a variety of similar situations, created a set of boots just for Maddie.

“Her orthopedic boots are brilliant – she isn’t the least bit bothered about having her legs strapped up, and you wouldn’t know she was different from any other dog,” said Prescott.

Following the corrective surgeries, and with the aid of the new splint boots, Maddie has stunned veterinarians with her incredible recovery. Not only is Maddie able to walk, but she and Prescott have returned to the agility ring together and are winning competitions once again.
