On Tuesday, Nicole Brownell got an unexpected phone call. Her 12-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Sadie, had been found almost 2 ½ years after she went missing from her Chicago home.

Sadie went missing in April of 2010, believed to have been stolen. A few months later the Brownells moved to Ohio. “We tried for such a long time to get her back,” said Brownell. On Monday, Sadie was found at a busy intersection by a Good Samaritan who brought her to a nearby veterinarian. Fortunately Sadie had a microchip, allowing the veterinarian to track down the Brownells in Ohio. “Getting that phone call yesterday was one of the best calls I ever got in my life,” said Brownell.

Brownell drove to Chicago to be reunited with Sadie. “I could barely sleep last night,” she said, “I couldn’t wait to get on the road. Everyone’s really excited. My husband has seen her, and he got there before I did today. And my brother’s coming from Iowa. My whole family is just overjoyed.” Most excited may be Brownell’s two young daughters, “My 7-year-old started crying, saying, ‘This is the best news I ever heard.’”

Sadie is down to only three pounds but she will be okay, especially now that she is back with her family.
