Americans and their pets have a number of things in common, one of them being a propensity for abundance – in other words, in increasing numbers, we’re getting fatter. It’s no secret that as a country, we are struggling with the migration to a largely sedentary lifestyle. And our pets are struggling right along with us.

Is your dog overweight? Use the following guidelines, or better yet, talk to your veterinarian.

What are the health risks of obesity?

Obesity can lead to, or exacerbate, cardiovascular disease, constipation (especially in cats), skin disease, insulin resistance leading to diabetes, joint stress leading to painful osteoarthritis and reduced mobility and is associated with lower urinary tract disease, urinary incontinence and bladder stones. Obesity can also increase anesthetic risk and can shorten a pet’s expected life span.
