Courtney Beach, 24, of Carson, was staying overnight at his friends house but the dogs were not welcomed. He left his two dogs, an 8-month-old German shepherd and pit bull mix and a 1-year-old Dachshund and pit bull mix, in his 2001 Jeep Cherokee with a bowl of water.

According to animal control officers, when they arrived early Wednesday, July 17th, the temperature marked 70 degrees outside the vehicle. The car reeked of urine and the water bowl was empty.

“People always equate it to being in an oven,” Deborah Holland of Lawndale Animal Control told KCAL9. “The sun beating on the windows of the car amplifies the heat.”

Sheriff’s officials released a press release saying the puppies tried sticking their noses out the windows that were cracked open while animal control officers and deputies tried to free them from the hot car.

“Both puppies appeared to be happy to be out of the hot vehicle,” said Lieutenant John Hocking. “They were just excited to see us. They were in that car for a long time.”

The pets were taken to a veterinarian and listed in good condition. They were given shots and then returned to their owner.

Beach was cited and faces $100 fine for leaving his dogs unattended inside the hot car.
