Last Wednesday Kathy Smith went to her local postal office in Lisbon, Ohio, with two of her four Bichon Maltese dogs, Sugar Bear and Strawberry. She left both dogs in the unlocked car because she was just making a quick stop. When she came back to the automobile, she found just one dog, a terrified Strawberry.

“It’s the first time I never locked my car and because I knew I wouldn’t be in there long. And I was in and out,” Smith told WKBN News. “When I came back out, Strawberry hid in the back of my car like she was scared to death and Sugar Bear was gone.”

Immediately the dog owner called police to report the stolen dog. Smith also called local pet businesses and the Humane Society of Columbiana County, but no one had received a dog matching Sugar Bear’s description.

A reward was being offered for the safe return of Sugar Bear, but the recent boom of pet theft seemed like a dark cloud over the canine’s hopeful return.

Local news outlets covered Sugar Bear’s disappearance and soon after residents started to contact Smith with sightings of the dog.

Around 1.a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, Smith headed to the area of Route 172 and County Home Road where Sugar Bear had been spotted. There, Smith found her beloved pet roaming the area.

Even though it is not known who took Sugar Bear from Smith’s car, the dog owner is happy the innocent animal was found unharmed.

Many dog owners go weeks, months, if not years, searching for their lost pets, luckily for Smith she was reunited with Sugar Bear in a matter of days.
