Cathy Gray of Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan was working as a citizen scientist, compiling meaningful stray dog data in Detroit Michigan, when she came across a terrified and visibly injured young dog. The dog, Penelope (Penny), was then rescued and received needed medical care and treatment.
Penny’s story will be continued on Saturday, when we will see her undergo further rehabilitation by taking part in Refurbished Pet’s unique prison canine “good behavior” rehabilitation program.

Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and is the first and only all breed, stray, and shelter dog Correctional Companion Program in Michigan. They are dedicated to saving dogs of all kinds from euthanasia by placing dogs with prison inmates who are responsible for their day to day care and training. The prisoners are educated in training and socializing the dogs before they are then placed in permanent homes. The dogs are carefully screened and once they are ready for adoption, they receive a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificate.
