On Oct. 7, 2013, Plano Animal Services in Texas, investigated an animal cruelty complaint and recovered a malnourished, 2-year-old boxer mix dog from a home. The pet was emaciated and suffered extensive nutritional deficiency. Due to his prolonged starvation, his bones never grew properly and the dog suffered from hip and front elbow deformities.
The dog, named Red, required multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation, but after being loved and cared for by Plano Animal Services employees, the rescued pet went from his death bed to a miraculous recovery.
“He is a very sweet dog, very loving,” Animal Services manager Jamey Cantrell said. “[We] didn’t want to give up on him.”
Red has some resource guarding issues when it comes to food, but this is expected of a dog that has been mistreated, neglected, and starved most of his life. Yet, thanks to his rehabilitation and socialization process, his social skills have greatly improved.
Cantrell believes that Red could do very well with a forever family that is willing to work through his physical and social issues. The lack of nutrition weakened his leg muscles and the canine requires physical therapy to help rebuild and strengthen his muscles.
Plano Animal Services is looking for Red’s forever home. They hope that once the public learns about the pet’s tragic background and current accomplishment, a family will fall in love with the miracle dog and take him home.
