6.2.14 - Pizza Place Makes Treats to aid Humane Society1

A chain of pizza restaurants in Detroit, Michigan are using leftover pizza dough to make tasty treats for our furry family members.

Buddy Bones debuted recently at Buddy’s Pizza and are available at all 10 Buddy’s locations.  Parents of furry family members can pick up the treats for a $2 donation that will go to the Michigan Humane Society (MHS).

Before making the treats, the pizza company consulted with officials and health specialist with the humane society to make sure the multi-grain crust bits used to make them would be safe for canine consumption.  After being given the green light on the ingredients, they set out to make these special treats, with the hopes of raising some money to find loving forever homes for some furry friends in need.

According to Mike Robbins, MHS chief marketing officer, “Buddy’s Pizza has been involved in our community for many years and we are extremely proud to team up with them to help the homeless animals in our care.  Buddy Bones are made from the same ingredients that are in Buddy’s delicious multi-grain crust, so it’s not only a treat your dog will love, you will love giving them as well!”

Because Buddy’s makes their dough fresh every day, there is leftover dough that didn’t make it into a pizza.  Usually, this dough is simply discarded.  However, in a genius idea, these otherwise tossed scraps have found a new purpose, dog treats.

“Many of our own employees are pet owners,” said VP of operations for Buddy’s Wesley Pikula. “Buddy’s Pizza has always felt our customers were like members of our Buddy’s family. We enjoy supporting each other and community organizations that work to make a difference here. It also made sense to extend a partnership we already had with the Michigan Humane Society. We have been supporting events like the Meet Your Best Friend pet adoptions at the Detroit Zoo for many years by providing pizza to volunteers. This way, we can also help feed those pets finding new homes – as well as those in need of homes.”

Buddy Bones are going to be available in two sizes so all dogs can enjoy them.  They have larger ones, about 15 grams a piece for bigger dogs, and smaller ones weighing in around 5 grams each.
