Tiny Dog Is Left at Shelter with Heartbreaking Note

A tiny dog loses her home and family just because her owners didn’t have money to treat her fleas.

We’re sure Pinky never though she would one day find herself homeless after having a family all to her own, but this little dog was abandoned at Sacramento SPCA on August 15, 2015, with a note explaining why. Once you read the note, your heart will break.

“Hi, my name is Pinky. My family tried really hard to get rid of my fleas but couldn’t, and I’m suffering. They didn’t have any way to get help because they don’t have any money. They loved me so much that they decided to take me to a non-kill shelter to get the help I need. I brought all my stuff for my new family. Thank you for your help.”

The saddest part isn’t that fleas are easily treated and Pinky could be back home with her family if they had just asked for help. What breaks our heart is that Pinky’s family erroneously believed the Sacramento ASPCA is a no-kill shelter. If Pinky is not adopted after her stray hold period, she could easily be euthanized.

When the shelter found the pet at their doorstep they posted a picture of the dog an the note on their Facebook wall with the following message:
“[It] is heartbreaking for all parties involved. We wish we had an opportunity to speak with the owners to see what they had tried and if we could offer them another solution. If you or someone you know is having an issue with a pet, whether it be behavioral or medical, please share this resource with them so we can try to keep pets home with their families: www.keepyourpet.com

Pinky has already garner lots of attention and hundreds have expressed interest in adopting her. However, the dog will be on a five-day stray hold and only after this period she will be available for adoption through the ASPCA.

Rescuers say Pinky is very sad and scared. They have treated her fleas with Advantage and hope to help her break out of her shell during their stray hold period. If Pinky proves more difficult to get ready for adoption, the ASPCA will reach out to rescue organizations for help and they will be the ones making the pooch available for adoption when and if she is ready.

See how social Pinky is today, we think she will be adopted soon!

    1. I guess you meant “crap” as a carp is a fish. And no, flea treatment does not only cost pennies, it’s expensive , very expensive.

  1. If they had asked, there would have been hundreds of people willing to pay for the flea treatment. That’s so sad that they surrendered her. I hope she finds a loving home that can care for her.

  3. The only hope in this situation is now that the story will be seen all over the U.S. and Pinky will have a chance to find a REAL forever home. Its obvious she wasn’t wanted. That pisses me off. Sometimes bad things happen so better things can fall into place. Let’s hope!

  7. People are so quick to judge. You don’t know what their situation is. If these people did not care they would have dropped the dog off with no note.

  9. I know this is a hard thing to do but better than just dropping them on the street but hopefully people will ask for help after reading this

  11. They didn’t have to explain a thing and open themselves up to all this Monday morning quarterbacking. This kind of bashing and shaming is why people dump dogs in remote areas where they can’t be seen. We need to support people trying to do right even if it’s a little misguided.

  13. Yes people are quick to judge…but c’mon…seriously…u can’t get flea shampoo?? Why didn’t they ask for some at the vet or the ASPCA?? If they truly loved the dog? Hope she finds a better family.

  15. No matter what, I could NEVER get rid of any of my there babies. If I had to not eat just so they could, that’s what I would do. I don’t understand why people do this to babies that they love. This poor pup.

  16. Oh that poor baby! I have 3 longcoat chihuahuas, how anyone could be so cruel is beyond me. I’m nowhere near Sacramento, but if it’s needed, I’d take Pinky in a heartbeat! She looks so much like my sweet Sebastian. Heartless people sicken me!

  17. Has anyone even tried to find her family???? Maybe they did ask for help and didn’t get any. I bet they would love to have her home as much as she would like to go home.

  18. It’s interesting to note that a page that seemingly strives for rehoming and adoption, is running advertisements for labradoodle puppies? Do you even screen your advertisers?? Shame on you!

  19. How do I say this nicely? I can’t so I won’t. People suck. There is NEVER a reason to abandon a member of your family especially a dog that loves unconditionally and has no idea why the “humans” they loved so much did this! And all the assholes that say not to judge, kiss my ass in Macy’s window you moron. If people cared more there wouldn’t be all these animals euthanized for no reason except for dumbasses that do this and the other dumbasses that say don’t judge them.

  20. DO NOT take on any pet that you will not keep, until death do you part!!!! They are not cheap, they can need medical care, they get old, whatever! Plan for all of that, just like you should with a child, and then stick to it!!!! I had to transport 2 dogs yesterday from a county ‘pound’ to a rescue center, and one had been surrendered because he got old! He was soooo scared and shaking sooooo bad in my car, that he threw up! This lack of love and concern on the human’s part is unconscionable! And I will judge everyone who abandons a furbaby, either in a remote area or at a shelter! Those babies are scared to death! Think, before you take on any animal!!!

  21. “I brought all my stuff for my new family” got me tearing up immediately. I hardly think the fleas were the only problem, or then her(?) family must be extremely poor, which would be no news to be honest. Poor baby.

  22. It is so easy to judge from your computer. You have no idea what people go through. I sincerely hope you never have to find out.

  23. Fleas are very difficult to get rid of if you have an infestation. They can cause your dog to become anemic. Flea shampoo doesn’t always work. This is heartbreaking!

  24. These people are way too intellectually impaired to be the caregivers for any type of living being. Please I implore whoever this is not to ever acquire another living creature! Maybe the note is even a joke? Fleas??? Get a grip.

  25. People you just don’t drop at any shelter ask questions about it and what’s going on with your dog. Don’t be that stupid ask ask!!

  26. Brandi Glanville should get this dog. She is in Sacramento. Brandi is from Sacramento and likes small dogs. Someone should try to contact her or her PR folks. This could be a great story.

  27. that’s a bogus excuse. I have a chihuahua that occasionally gets fleas when it gets hot out…a $5 bottle of flea killing dog shampoo from Target does the trick, once every two weeks.

  28. My vet is like most vet’s, kind and caring. I get calls now and then for help. One call was fleas. People think flea shampoo. No, the house was overrun with them. Total cost without exterminator, was $120. Bombs in every room and basement and attic. Times 2. So it can be very expensive to older citizens on Social Security. So don’t judge, help.

  29. Just worry about the dog!!!! Why must you all talk about the ‘terrible’ owners? SHARE……..FOSTER……..ADOPT…….or say nothing!
