Man Sneaks Dog in Suitcase to See Dying Wife in Hospital One Last Time

This touching tale comes from redditor Mellifluous_Username:

Full disclosure: This happened one year, three days, and fourteen hours ago. I was inclined to post this after I saw this post.

My wife was in the hospital after a very invasive surgery, which after a few days, looked like it did not produce ideal results. The prognosis was not good. She was able to speak, but was not eating or drinking, and relied completely on her IV and hard pain pills. In one rare instance of cogent speech, she convinced me to sneak our dog into her private room, so she could see her “one more time.”

Our dog, Bella, is about a 50 pound Australian Shepherd, and as it turns out, she fits nicely in a normal suitcase. I packed her in, with the lid unzipped, and placed her in the car until we arrived at the hospital. When we arrived, I “explained” to her that I would open the zipper in a few minutes and that she could see her Mommy.

Unbelievably, she never whimpered, barked, or whined. When I walked past the station nurses, I told them I was simply bringing items to make my wife more comfortable. No problem, they said.

When we entered the room, my wife was asleep. I unzipped the suitcase, and Bella immediately jumped on the bed, and gingerly laid across her chest, somehow avoiding the wires and IV. She positioned herself to where she could look directly into my wife’s eyes, and laid completely still, until about twenty minutes later, when my wife woke up, and started moaning in pain.

Bella immediately started licking her, and quietly moaned, as if knowing that barking would definitely blow our cover. My wife hugged her for almost an hour, smiling the whole time. We were busted by one nurse who was so touched that she promised not to tell. When my wife finally went back to sleep, I loaded Bella back in the suitcase, and she somewhat sheepishly obliged.

My wife sadly passed a few days later, and now, whenever I grab the suitcase, (any suitcase) Bella thinks we are going to see her again.

  1. This is the sweetest and saddest thing I read today. I am so sad that she is dying yet I am happy that she got to see, hug and kiss her beautiful fur baby. God be with her and her family

  2. My mother was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and we have been in and out of hospitals ever since. Two of the hospitals we have gone to allow dogs that have their shots, are trained not to jump, and are under the supervision of their owners at all times. Unfortunately, our little 14 pound dog does not listen very well and would be jumping up and down on everyone in sight. 🙂 I think it’s fantastic that they are allowing people that have their animals there. It is comforting for both the owner and the pet! Plus, there are therapy dogs that go to see patients who are having difficulties and those who don’t have many visitors

  3. So sweet. My family snuck in one of my foster kittens to see me while I was in the hospital for a few weeks. It was the best thing ever.

  4. I once sneaked my tea cup yorkie into a hospital to see an elderly lady who was very ill. I put him in a cool bag and stroked his head. He didn’t make a sound and I swear he smiled when he saw her. It was as if he knew. One of the nurses saw him and just pulled the curtain around the bed.

  5. If most hospitals allow “therapy dogs” to visit patients, it would seem to be a no brainer for a dying person’s fur baby to be allowed to see his mommy or daddy. ???

  6. Some hospitals will let you bring a dog to see a patient. I took my dog to see my father when he was in hospital. Ask. If the doctor gives approval you can bring a dog. Things are changing.

  7. So touching. More and more, hospitals, rehab centers and nursing homes encourage pets to visit. My husband had a stroke 2 years ago and was in a rehab center. I didn’t even ask, just put Cozy in her carrier and went to the center. When I got to the nurse’s station they knew, so they all had to see her first (lol). It cheered my hubby up to see her, but Cozy didn’t want to stay too long in an unfamiliar place.

  8. And they should not have to sneak a dog in! Patient Centered Care should honor a family visit, and that means all family!

  9. When our lovely girl was dying of cancer we were allowed to “discreetly” take her small pooch Tyson in to see her. He brought her great comfort and was the reason she wanted home to die as she didn’t want stolen moments with him she wanted him there with her at all times. She passed away at home with all her loved ones including Tyson with her <3

  10. Now I’ve stopped crying i can comment. This was a magic thing u did for both you’re wife n Bella. I recently had my 6th massive back surgery n my husband was able to bring both my dogs to me .Was wonderful to have Bandit n Chelsea Rose in my room ??????

  11. A friend of mine got really sick and had to have emergency surgery. Even after the surgery things weren’t going well. She and her husband have two 8 pound yorkie-poos. Her husband was really bothered by her care. He’s about 6 foot 3. He went home and got the girls (Nala and Abby) had one on each arm and walked right into the hospital with them. When he got to the nurses station they looked at him and didn’t even get a word out before he said THERAPY and gestured to the dogs. He just kept walking, nobody stopped him. The girls were quiet and just laid with their mama on her bed. She came home from the hospital 2 days later.

  12. My husband took his last breath surrounded by all our 5 poodles & 2 cats, me holding his hand, his baby the teacup & oldest,,was on his pillow, my lips touched his , she liked his face..with a smile he mouthed I will be waiting for you’ll and that has been what kept me from losing g my mind..Sir you are man & special husband all wives , especially your lady was lucky to have you… Blessing & Peace to you’ll ! ! !
