Lana, also known as the “saddest dog in the world,” became an internet star after an image of her sad self inside a kennel went viral on Facebook. The dog’s adoption didn’t workout and she was returned, but now thanks to that sad photo and the hundreds of people willing to adopt Lana, the dog is smiling again.

On Oct. 24, 2015, Mighty Mutts a rescue shelter and dog training organization based in Toronto, Canada, shared a photo of Lana after she had been returned to the organization. They posted the image on their Facebook page along a note pleading for someone to come forward and foster or adopt Lana.

Mighty Mutts said they had rescued Lana from a bad situation when she was just a pup. She came in with her siblings and mom and due to the conditions they were found in, Lana learned some negative behavior (resource guarding) at a very a young age. Fortunately, the organization found homes for the family and at five-months-old Lana was lucky to move into a forever.

Unfortunately, the dog was returned to the organization a year later due to her resource guarding issues. The rescue dog’s family included young children and the dog’s aggressive behavior could have turned dangerous in a household with young kids.

Lana is now 1.5-years-old and the rejection she felt when she was surrendered affected her deeply. She was depressed and wouldn’t interact with any of the rescue workers. Worried about her mental health, the organization posted the sad image and hoped someone would come forward to foster or adopt the dog. Keeping Lana alone in a kennel wouldn’t do her any good.

Well, sharing the sad image proved to be just what Lana needed. The picture moved hundreds of people to inquire about the dog and soon after it was shared, the “saddest dog in the world” landed a new foster home. There, Lana has opened up to love and is smiling again (see images below).

Mighty Mutts never expected the post to become so popular, but they are glad to see there are plenty of people that want to adopt Lana. This sweet girl is expected to move into a new forever home soon.
