“It’s very nice to see all the care that she has with them, licking them all the time and nestling them,” Stephanie Maldonado said.

Dogs are simply the best at being adoptive moms.  When they’re presented with an orphaned baby, their maternal instincts kick right in, so a story about this comes as no surprise.  But it’s not every day that you hear about a dog being the proud parent of a posse of opossums!  She even carries them around on her back, just like a real opossum mama.

Last month, a dog got into a scuffle with an opossum in Brazil, and sadly, the opossum was killed.  But someone found her little joeys, and gave them to Stephanie Maldonado to deal with.

She wanted to take them to a local wildlife rescue group, but they already had too many animals to take them in.  So she undertook the task of hand-rearing the babies herself.  Their eyes weren’t even open yet, and they needed to be bottle fed every two hours.

Thankfully, her dog, Pretinha, was happy to help.  She was glad to mother them and keep them safe.

Though puppies do climb around a lot, once mom stands up, they are back on the ground.  But not with Pretinha’s litter!  They climb on and hold on, and this mama doesn’t mind taking them for piggyback rides.

It’s been about a month now, and the joeys are thriving.  Maldonado hopes that when they are grown, they can be returned to the wild.

    1. Humans are nasty animals, opossums would never kill just for some perceived slight or steal or or or or. I won’t go on. Humans are filthy, polluting animals that have caused the extinction of so many other animal species, and have destroyed so much of the Earth’s beautiful landscape that there may be no, probably is no, fixing it. We can do damage control, but there are too many humans on this planet, not too many wild animals.

    2. Santorum and Huckabee did come close, though. They are power players in the gop, like it or not.Should civil rights been left up to the states? Slavery? Women voting? Non-land owners voting?

  1. I don’t think returning them to the wild is an option with so much contact with humans and dogs. They will approach they wrong person/dog and will be killed.

    1. When I was a volunteer at a wildlife rescue we would take care of baby ‘possums all the time and they do fine being released if, after they can eat on their own, you stop handling them. It’s hard not to pick them up and pet them because they are so cute! But, not too hard when they get bigger because, holy moley, their poo stinks!

      1. They also have teeth! I had a friend who had one in a cage in their beautiful home. They would give him fruit and veggies and he would wash them like a racoon in the kitchen sink. He coat was beautiful and he loved his bath. So I would hold him and he would crawl up to my face and smile….and my heart would stop. Was like having a shark in your face.

  2. xanax…It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thick…
