Rebecca Rodriguez and Alycia Hadfield are animal rescuers. And they recently received some precious cargo from Puerto Rico in the form of seven lovely strays who they’ll soon help find new homes here in the states.

“They’re here! They are here – yes!” Rodriguez squealed during a report with Portland NBC affiliate KGW. The dogs came through cargo at Portland’s airport – 10 more will follow soon, bringing their island rescue total to 17.

The pair were invited to Puerto Rico by a group looking for a solution to the nation’s ample stray dog problem. In addition to consulting and strategizing, they rounded up a group of lucky canines for rescue.

Additional trips to the island are planned, but for now, they are delighted that the 17 they’ve saved will be fostered and then put up for adoption here in the states.

Saving 17, as the saying goes, may not make a big dent in Puerto Rico’s problem, but for each individual dog – it makes all the difference in the world.
