An Arizona dog named Summer is safe today after spending close to an hour wandering the westbound lanes of US-60 in Mesa. Social media allowed for an ID; the dog’s owner was notified via Facebook post about the dog’s whereabouts when she heard about Summer’s stint on the local news.
Captured on both aerial video and traffic camera, the dog evaded capture by concerned citizens who had stopped on the highway in an attempt to lure the dog into their cars. State troopers got in on the pursuit, as well. Meanwhile, traffic ground to a halt.
Arizona NBC affiliate News 12 reported that up to two lanes at once were completely frozen as rescues on the dog were attempted.
Doubtless terrified, police reported the dog behaved aggressively, attempting to bite a motorist who was trying to remove it from beneath a truck under which it was hiding.
The Department of Public Safety eventually corralled the pooch, exhausted and spooked, but unharmed.
Summer’s owner gave a positive ID at the local pound, noting the dog had been missing since escaping the yard on Friday. She will remain in quarantine for 10 days due to lack of a current rabies shot on record.
