The Mission Statement on their Nowzad website says it all:
The aim of the charity is to improve the welfare of the animals of Afghanistan; which includes humanely reducing the stray dog population which in turn will reduce the incidents of canine rabies, provide animal welfare education for the Afghan people and develop training programmes to improve the lives of working animals. We have also now helped over 800 soldiers serving in Afghanistan to be reunited back in their home countries (USA, UK, Canada, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Holland and Germany) with the dogs or cats they rescued from the front lines of Afghanistan.

Royal Marine Sergeant ‘Pen’ Farthing saw something he wasn’t entirely prepared for when he was in the war-torn town of Now Zad. It wasn’t only the people who needed their help, so did the animals, for which their was no advocating.  Following the break-up of a dog fighting ring, Farthing rescued one of the fighting dogs who captured his heart and was named, “Nowzad.”
The story of Nowzad, his rescue and that of other canines from the remote desert location, is told in Farthing’s best-selling book One Dog at a Time, the proceeds of which both support and promote the Nowzad Dogs Charity.  Founded in 2007, a registered 501c3 non-profit (Illinois) and registered charity in England & Wales, the organization operates, outside of Kabul, the only official animal shelter in the country.  As part of this project, Afghan nationals have been trained to run a small animal clinic, as well.
This touching video shares a brief glimpse of the organization, their objectives, and goals.
