The Best Day Ever for this “Vicktory Dog?” Kitten Snuggling!

The nightmare is over for the pit bulls rescued from Michael Vick’s Virginia dog fighting operation, the “Vicktory Dogs as they have come to be called, shining examples of this misunderstood breed’s ability to overcome horrendous abuse, to be the loving, caring (and often even goofy, clownish and wimpy!) dogs they are born to be.

BarkPost brings the world dog-centric news every day and in part of its ongoing video series, Dog’s Best Day, the site recently profiled Cherry Garcia (or simply, “Cherry”), one of the 50 pitties pulled from the Michael Vick horror show who in 2010 was adopted by a loving family.

Cherry’s new life includes lots of family time and, likely much to the surprise of folks who wonder about the true nature of bully breeds, snuggling with kittens!

“Cherry just loves his kittens, he has two cats now and he loves to play with them,” Paul Fiaccone, Cherry’s owner told BarkPost in the attatched video. “Every time he’s around kittens, it’s like all the stress goes away. He would definitely love to be a kitty nanny for a day.”

And so for Cherry’s “Best Day Ever,” wherein BarkPost (and in this case, Friends of Berlin Animal Control) treats its featured pup to a tailor-made perfect day, Cherry’s gift included time spent snuggling little kitties in his very own Kitten Cuddle Fort!

Additional treats included a trip to Brownstone Bakery for Dogs for a deliciously lickable dog-safe sundae, and time spent digging and splashing at his own makeshift beach.

“What people don’t understand, [is] that the dogs in fighting rings are no different than any other dog. The proof is in Cherry,” Fiaccone said. “He wants to be happy. He wants to give back. What he wants to do is love.”

The Vick dogs, 53 in all, were removed from their horrendous living situation in 2007. Many organizations at that time thought that euthanization was the only merciful option given the abuse they had suffered, but rather than snuff out these warm candles, Best Friends Animal Society took 22 of them in in an attempt to nurture the small fires inside them and grow them stronger.

Many, of course, were traumatized, Cherry among them.

“When we would try to walk him, he would flatten his body right to the ground and almost crawl because he was so scared,” Michelle Weaver, Best Friends’ director of animal care, told BarkPost.

But by the time 2010 came around and the Fiaccones were ready to adopt him, Cherry had had a complete turnaroun.

“Watching him with our 2-year-old son and our newborn daughter is something more special than I could ever describe,” Fiaccone told The Huffington Post in 2014. “He is always keeping an eye on them and he loves them so much. It’s hard to think of my son without having Cherry in the picture…. We have learned so much from Cherry. This is a dog that [had been]… flat-out tortured, yet he keeps moving forward, he doesn’t have a rear view mirror. He doesn’t look at himself as a victim, he looks at himself as a survivor.”

  1. If you want to know more of the story, there is a great documentary on Netflix called “The Champions.” It tells what happened to the dogs that were rescued. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars!

  2. Makes my heart smile. I have never forgiven Vick for what he did. He is inherently evil. ONLY someone evil would commit such horrid acts against God’s creatures.

  3. All I can say is Micheal Vick, one day you will be judged. KARMA…. May you feel the pain of all the innocent souls that were tortured and killed by your hands..

  4. All I can say is bless all the dogs and their guardians. Micheal Vick, one day you will be judged. May you feel the pain of all the innocent souls that were tortured or killed by your hands.

  5. Still waiting and Praying for the day Michael Vic, breaks his neck on the football field, not to die but to sit and think about the Horrible things he did. Maybe a caregiver will repay him with a little of his own medicine!!! Scumbag Piece of SHIT!!! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!!!

  6. So amazing these animals capacity to love after all they have been through. A great story, and and many wishes for a happy and wonderful life to Cherry .
