Reece the golden retriever had a happy life in California, but when her owner passed away, she had no one to take care of her. When a friend of the deceased realized she’d been relegated to an animal shelter, she stepped in to help. With assistance from Pilots N Paws, an organization of volunteer pilots and plane owners that help rescues coordinate transportation for animals in need, Reece was able to make the journey from the west coast to Indiana, where her owners parents live.

The journey wasn’t immediate — she spent time in Colorado and with a foster family in Kansas along the way — but made it to the heartland town of Zionsville, IN, on Sunday. She will go home to her forever family later this week.
