A blood trail led to the rescue of a dog who fled a Pennsylvania home last week following a burglary.

Four-year-old Jax (look at that face!) was found by the Hound Hunters search group one day after Pocono Mountain Regional police believe intruders broke into the Coolbaugh Township home in which he lived

“We followed the blood trail,” Christine Cahill of Hound Hunters of Northeastern Pennsylvania told The Morning Call.

Though the trail was briefly lost, Hound Hunters picked it up again, then spotted Jax emerging from behind a house. The dog had suffered three bullet wounds, one to a front leg and two to the abdomen.

“He was limping, moving slowly and in obvious pain,” she said. “We got him into his daddy’s car and got him to the emergency vet right away.”

The dog was taken to the Barton Heights Veterinary Hospital. While Jax is still in the hospital’s care today, Cahill says he is “doing well so far.”

Police said the was “full of blood” on Thursday night. They later determined the dog had been shot, perhaps as he tried to defend the home from intruders.

Cahill said that, despite shrapnel from the bullets, his major organs appeared to be healthy.

A GoFundMe webpage has been established to raise money for the dog’s hospitalization. The campaign set a goal of $3,600. At press time, $680 had been donated.

Cahill said contributions can be made through the Gofundme site or directly to the Barton Heights Veterinary Hospital at 117 Terrace Drive, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
