This terrier mix has a new lease on life, but prior to rescue, that precious life hung in the balance. Happy was once a bait dog in an Alabama dog fighting operation. At the time of her rescue, says her new owner, she was next in line to be sacrificed.

These days, life is brand-new.

“She’s wagging her tail most of the time so I call her ‘Happy,’” her owner told CBS affiliate WKRG.

Happy’s injuries have healed and hopefully, many of the memories of her previous life have faded.

“I had intentions of re-homing her but I just got too attached to her. So, she is with me now….” says her ‘mom.’

Happy’s owner doesn’t want to be identified for fear of retaliation. Police are still looking for at least four suspects in the Bay Minette, AL, dog fighting ring.

Jermaine Jackson was arrested and faces charges of animal cruelty and attending a dog fight.

“So many people are money hungry and blood thirsty. They like to see another animal get hurt and I don’t understand that.”

Happy has a bright, new life ahead of her. “She’s one of the gang now,” her owner says, and that’s a happy ending in anyone’s book.

A couple more bits of good news: two pit bulls were also rescued from the dog-fighting ring and have since been adopted, as well.
