Our dogs often seem like our heroes, but one family dog in Virginia really earned that title this week when he thwarted a kidnap attempt on his 10-year-old owner.

The family’s little girl was walking the pup in her Woodbridge, VA, neighborhood just before 4 p.m. when she was approached by a man she didn’t know.

People reported that according to the Prince William County police, the suspect allegedly grabbed the girl by the arm and tried to abduct her. The dog, however, had different ideas about how strangers should behave around his girl and bit the man, who then ran off. The girl was not injured.

Police, including K-9s, searched the region but the suspect remains at large. He is described as a young man in his late teens or early 20s, weighing around 145 lbs. and under 5-ft., 6-in., with dark hair and a goatee. He was last seen wearing a white striped shirt and light pants.

Anyone who may have information about the man or incident is encouraged to call the Prince William County Police Department at (703) 792-6500.
