A Dog’s Last Will & Testament

All these frosty faces need a home!  If you’d like to give them a place, please click here.

You may have seen this poem before, but it’s so sweet, it’s always worth sharing again.  Who knows – it could help a shelter dog find a home.

Before humans die, they write their last will and testament, giving their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask…

To a poor and lonely stray, I’d give my happy home; my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow and all my toys; the lap, which I loved so much; the hand that stroked my fur; and the sweet voice that spoke my name.

I’d will to the sad, scared, shelter dog the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds.

So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and the pain is more than I can stand.”

Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope, and give my place to him.

This is the only thing I can give…

The love I left behind.

  1. Thank you so much for posting! I recently put our beloved rescue down and have adopted another — not a replacement but another pup who needed a forever home.

  3. It still hurts so bad! Dakota was more than just a dog he was my friend. I had to kneel in front of him as they put him to sleep yesterday. I’ve lost many animals in my 50 years but Dakota was the golden dog (Golden Retriever) My best buddy!
    RIP Dakota

  4. A DOGS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, this is the most beautiful saying I have ever read, I am a big animal lover. I have a black Labrador that lives in our house and I couldn’t live without her, but one of these days I will have to, or she will have to live without me. A friend sent me this lovely saying and then a few days ago at the dinner table the message was left and my lab decided she would eat it up, but particles were left and I rescued them, but not all the pieces. I am so glad I found this message on here, but my printer wouldn’t print. I have written it off, but was wondering if you know or have a picture that I can buy. I would love to have one to hang on the wall with all my other doggie things. I would love to buy one if you know where I can do that. Can’t tell you how much I like the saying. Cry every time I read it, I have lost dogs before, but didn’t have this saying. It is great, and will never forget it. Sure wish my doggie hadn’t decided to eat it. Thanks for writing it as there must be many other people that like it just as I do. Any place you can tell me where to get it I would appreciate it. I will be giving it to my doggie friends also.

  5. I have lost so many pets in my life, the last 7 were shelter dogs. As I got older I didn’t let as much time pass before getting a new pet but always felt a little guilty about. Getting a new pet while I was still grieving over the one I lost seemed like I should have waited longer. …..out of respect for beloved pet I had just lost. This poem has helped me get over that guilt. I always adopt from shelters. I have since the ’70’s. But now I don’t feel so much like I am disrespecting the pets I have loved and lost. Thank you for sharing it.
