In Canada, the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) rescued 20 abandoned animals from a garbage dump in a rural area just outside of Calagary.

AARCS was called to check on a couple of injured dogs spotted at the garbage dump, but when rescuers arrived they found multiple litters of puppies, older dogs and cats living among the garbage.

“It must have been either a place where local people would drop off unwanted animals, or a place where the animals were seeking out because maybe it was a good food source,” Katie Ayres with AARCS told CBC Canada.

The organization says this is not the first time they have been called to rescue animals from the garbage site, but it is the first time they find so many abandoned animals there at one time. Ayres believes that with the cold weather, locals are more likely to notice the abandoned pets, and because they are concerned for the pets’ welfare due to frigid temperatures, calls come in asking for help.

AARCS is currently lacking foster homes and they are urging the community to step up to adopt or foster one of the many animals in need. They currently have 362 cats and about 250 dogs in need of adoption.
