A Colorado woman has been awarded $65,000 for the death of her beloved dog, in what her attorney calls an “unprecedented” victory for animal law.

Robin Lohre will receive a $65,000 payout for the death of her 18-month-old dog Ruthie after a Posh Maids employee let the dog escape the home. It was struck by a car, and rather than seek medical treatment, the maid left the dog curled up under the dining room table. Lohre came home hours later to find her dog dead.

“I am pleased with the court’s decision,” said Lohre. “It doesn’t bring back Ruthie, but it does acknowledge the loss that my daughter and I experienced.”

According to legal experts, the case may be the largest single judgment for the death of a pet in Colorado.
