A dog from Mexico City fell 49 feet into a cave located in the Chapultepec Forest and spent 15 days trapped in the void. Fortunately, after various attempts, animal rescuers were able to locate and pull the dog to safety.

A man witnessed when the dog fell and contacted authorities immediately. Local firefighters were dispatched but after hours of searching for the dog and coming empty-handed, the rescue mission came to and end. Days later, a second team tried to rescue the dog, but they too were unsuccessful.

Throughout the 15 days, local residents would hear the dog howling and tried on their own to locate the pet, but they never found the pet. Concerned citizens threw food down the hole to help the canine stay alive and after 15 days and multiple calls for help, authorities dispatched a third team of rescuers to try to retrieve the pet.

On December 10, 2014, the SSPDF (Secretaría de Seguridad Pública del Distrito Federal) organized a rescue mission where a team of experts were lowered into the 49 feet deep cave. Once the team was inside the cave, they walked an additional 164 feet until the canine was located.

Leticia Varela, director of SSPDF, said she was proud of her team. This rescue mission was a true statement of how far the organization is willing to go to save a life.

The dog suffered minor bruises and veterinarians said that after all the pet went through, he was in good health.

SSPDF said they will help the dog find a new forever home once he fully recovers.
