8.16.13 - Iams & Eukanuba Recall

Proctor and Gamble has issued a recall for several of their pet foods due to potential salmonella contamination.

No illnesses have been reported, but the company is pulling products from shelves after some samples tested positive for salmonella during routine testing.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” Proctor and Gamble said in a statement.

Symptoms include fever, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, lethargy and shock. These symptoms may also be found in humans and cats. Failure to treat salmonellosis can lead to gastroenteritis, spontaneous abortions in pregnant dogs, and septicemia.

Products recalled include dry Iams dog and cat food, and dry Eukanuba dog food. Customers may visit here to check recalled product codes to see if they have any of the potentially contaminated food. The company is advising customers to please discard any products with matching codes.

“The affected product was distributed to select retailers across the United States,” a statement on the Food and Drug Administration’s recalls website reads. “These products were made during a 10-day window at a single manufacturing site. P&G’s routine testing determined that some products made during this time frame have the potential for Salmonella contamination…. No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned wet food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement.”
