A missing 2-year-old South Carolina child was found safe Saturday morning, and Kershaw County deputies say the family dog kept watch over him all night, likely saving his life.

The boy’s mother called police Friday after Tyler went missing, telling investigators that he left the bedroom where they were watching a movie to get some juice, and never came back. Concerned that overnight temperatures in the 40s could prove life threatening, Kershaw County deputies spent all of Friday night searching for Tyler with a bloodhound tracking team and helicopters. The search resumed Saturday morning: shortly thereafter the boy and his dog were found together.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said 22-month-old Tyler Jacobson was reunited with his family after he was found in the forest across the street behind a neighbor’s home with his faithful dog, a mixed Labrador retriever, by his side. “To tell you the truth,” said Matthews, “that dog is what kept him alive.”
