Time may not heal all wounds, but in the case of Sasha Brown, it has made a world of difference. A year ago she was on the verge of death, much of her skin gone, bones ground down from being dragged behind a truck. Now the little dog whose remarkable journey touched animal lovers worldwide has a new life with small animal surgeon Dr. Patti Sura, a new name, and a loving home.

The Knoxville Police Department charged Jimmy Lovell, 45, with aggravated animal cruelty after he allegedly dragged the dog behind a pickup truck on Thursday, Nov 5, 2009.  Lovell was arrested, charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, and jailed in lieu of $2,500 bond. His trial is set for July 18, 2011. Lovell claims the incident was an accident.

On the mend and gaining confidence, Sasha (her new name) Brown recently passed tests for the Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee program. In the future she will visit schools to listen to children read. “She’s a charmer. Wherever she is, she wants to be there,” says Sura. “I think people are drawn to that. She’s a dog that can block everything else out for the moment she is with you and make you feel important.” In an interview with the Knoxville News Sentinel, Sura gives us a glimpse of life with Little Brown Dog, and shares her remarkable transformation from battered victim to cherished companion.
