Los Angeles county animal control officials are heralding the loyalty of a black Labrador retriever that braved traffic to stay by another dog who was fatally injured after being hit by a car on April 12, 2012, in La Puente, Calif.
UPDATE (3/16/12)Â Despite earlier reports that Grace would be adopted by the man who found her, her family came forward to claim her Monday morning. Maggie’s family wasn’t the first to claim ownership of the dog. But it was the first family to have the paperwork to prove it. They also knew her real name: Maggie.
Maggie will go home Tuesday following a home inspection. Her family will be issued citations for having an unregistered dog and allowing it to run loose – a small price to pay for the return of an obviously faithful friend.

“When I saw the video clip taken by a passerby’s cellphone, I became emotional,” said Marcia Mayeda, director of the Los Angeles County animal shelter in Baldwin Park. The dog can be seen holding vigil by the side of a fallen friend in a cell phone video taken at the scene.
Ironically, the faithful dog was taken to a local shelter.
“Our officers picked up both dogs from the location, and the brave dog, who staff and volunteers have named Grace, will be available for adoption soon,” Mayeda said.
Apparently, that adoption is already is process. The man who took the cell phone video at the scene, Eric Reynaga, is said to have put in an application to adopt Grace.
