Spaniards are mourning the death of Ney, a golden retriever from A Coruña, who was not just his owner’s best friend, but the best friend of anyone visiting Lugo Plaza.

Ney belonged to Marisol Paz, a florist with a small business located along the plaza. The dog joined Paz’s family when he was just a puppy and when he turned one, he accompanied his owner to work every day, for the next 12 years.

This friendly dog, brighten everyone’s day. He would stroll around the plaza allowing visitors to pet him and play with him. He never showed any signs of aggression. For many plaza regulars, seeing and petting Ney was part of their day.

The dog became a staple and an attraction. Many people would simply visit the plaza to meet the dog. As he aged, his owner had to place a small sign around the dog’s neck asking friends to restrain from feeding him. As a senior dog, Ney required a specific diet.

This past August, the dog celebrated his 13th birthday. Friends, family members and even strangers joined the celebration at the plaza. Cake was served, music was played, and many had the opportunity to take a picture with the birthday dog.

The pet is loved by so many that there is a plan to commemorate his life with a statue at the plaza.

Lugo Plaza won’t be the same without Ney.
