9.22.14 - Texas Dog Missing for Six Years Finally Located in Indiana

After being missing for six years, a Yorkie originally from Austin, Texas has been located in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Bailey’s family has been contacted, and they couldn’t be happier.

Everyone working at the Post Pet Hospital in Indiana agreed that Bailey was going to be a tough case.  Someone had seen Bailey out and about, bone in mouth just trotting around.  He noticed that the dog looked like it was in need of some medical attention and care, so he scooped Bailey up, and went to a vet.

“Looking at him when he came in, we were like, ‘He is not going to be chipped’ because he was covered in fleas, looked terrible, teeth were terrible,” said vet tech Diana Redmond.

When they did scan Bailey for a chip, they were surprised to find him registered.  The bigger surprise was yet to come when the vets found out Bailey was not from Indiana, but Austin Texas.  He had been missing from his home for six years up to that point, and his family was still very much missing him.  All of the phone numbers programmed into the chip were still valid, so Redmond started making phone calls.

“She could barely talk.  ‘I’m overwhelmed.  I’m so excited.  I’m not making any sense.  Oh my gosh!  He is my family,’” Redmond remembered Bailey’s mom as saying.

Bailey was very important to his family.  He was the ring bearer in his owner’s wedding, he loved his new human sibling and had a bright future as a one well-loved and treated family member.  All of that was six years ago.  Not too many people expect to recover their furry family members after being missing for that amount of time.

Redmond remarked, “After his bath, he was so relaxed.  One of the girls was holding him and he just flopped over and fell asleep.  You could tell it was the first time he had fallen asleep in a long time with all of those fleas on him.”

Now comes the logistics of getting a dog from Indiana to Texas.  A fund was set up to help, and so far $800 has been raised to get Bailey home to his family.

“We actually have someone who is traveling to Austin Thursday night, so she will take him with her.  He needs medical care.  His teeth are rotten and in need of medical care, so the money raised will go to medical care,” said Danielle Beck from Indy Lost Pet Alert.

Of course, the biggest thing here is the fact that Bailey was chipped, and the information was still accurate.

According to Beck, “It is rare for a dog to be missing for six years and be secured with a microchip.”

There is a Go Fund Me page set up for Bailey to help out with the massive bill that comes along with doggy dentistry.  He will have to have a number of teeth pulled to help make him more comfortable.  Anyone wishing to check that page out for more info on Bailey and to donate, click here.  Bailey is set to be reunited with his family this Thursday.
