The Street Dogs of South Central

Narrated by Queen Latifah, this feature length documentary follows the story of Elsie—a mother struggling to raise her litter of puppies in a harsh urban environment. Every day Elsie and her brood travel the streets of South Central in search of food and shelter.

Their daily struggle for survival in the ghetto is brilliantly captured and emotionally revealed in this captivating film. STREET DOGS OF SOUTH CENTRAL captures the truly challenging conditions in which these canines live, and reveals how the dogs adapt with their innate abilities.

STREET DOGS OF SOUTH CENTRAL airs on Animal Planet HD Saturday, Feb 11th at 8pm PST/11m EST. It will also air on the regular Animal Planet channel Saturday Feb 11 at 11pm PST and 11pm EST.

This looks all too familiar, been in the area and witnessed it. I try to help one dog at a time but it’s overwhelming and scary. I’m gonna try to watch this tonight and share this link on my page. I’ve driven down our neighborhood street at night and have seen a group of strays meeting up in the middle of the street at 1 am when there was no car in sight. It’s like they know what to do and where to go. Our neighborhood is not a safe place to get out of the car alone at night :( its so sad.

Hollywood hotshots, should stop paying thousands of dollars for designer dogs and spend their tons of money saving these dogs right in their own back yard instead.

or just get togther with others from this neighborhood and catch these dogs spay and nuter them then no dogs will be able to have puppies anymore. they can pay for a few vets to come and fix the dogs in the hood. I am sure some kids would catch the dogs for them especially if its a sports idol or famous Movie starlet helping them out.

I too watched this film on Saturday night and have been unable to find a link or information on ways to help. I saw nothing on Animal Planet’s website or anywhere else. If you have found anything or if anyone has please post. It’s upsetting that a film like this was shown and then nothing was mentioned on ways to help. Thank you!

They just sat and videotaped while two pit bulls ran around the middle of a busy street and called animal control *after* one was hit by a car and suffered a severely broken leg. I understand the point of this show is to bring awareness but that is ridiculous and infuriating.

While I understand the need to film what really happens, I have to assume there were plenty of people filming the accident with Jack to have possibly prevented his injury. Still watching and hoping he gets adopted after having lost his leg. this show is so sad to watch. It sickens me that people walk by and see these dogs in need and go on with their lives as if they aren’t there. I suppose these are among the same people who threw them out in the first place though.

People in these neighborhoods shouldn’t be allowed to own pets unless they are spayed and neutered. Surely they’ll complain that they have rights to chose ..blah blah blah..look what choices they made! There are too many dogs left homeless because of people and their irresponsibility! Rip jill. So so sad.

After watching this show last night I could not sleep. I am so disgusted with the way this was handled. The two dogs Jack and Jill and what they went through, actually what all the dogs go through is terrible. Here you are following these dogs around filming them and then one gets hit by a car.
The next thing is that animal control comes and picks up both dogs. The one
that was hit has lost a leg and is separated from its other friend. The one that
was hurt finally finds a home, his friend is put to sleep. Why???? You being the film crew did not check to see what was going on with these two? You could not adopt this little one? You couldn’t ask around to see if you could find a home for her? I have found many a good home for many homeless dogs and cats by word of mouth. What about the people that adopted the
other dog? Were they told about the friendship between the two? I truly believe that you don’t care at all about these poor dogs. This is only a paycheck to you. I will tell you this I WILL NEVER WATCH ANIMAL PLANET AGAIN!!!!!!

How you Mr Bill Marin that directed this film, Bill Marin ,Vincent Ueber ,and Rene Duran who produced this film…. Queen Latifah who Narrated this film all put your heads down at night and go to sleep is beyond me and shameless absolutely shameless!!! You all are greedy self absorbed heartless pathethic scum bags not even worthy of being called a human being. How you could just watch these dogs go through hell and not help them is beyond all us dog lovers. I hope the images of these dogs haunts your sorry pathetic asses for the rest of your lives ! While these dogs go to heaven Im sure hell is waiting for all of you!!! Not a one of you has the balls to let the people know what happen to these dogs or Elsie. Seems like this documentary was filmed in 2008 and you just released it now, what a bunch of cowards. Another thing dispicable about you all is you made money off the pain and suffering of these dogs ! Every penny should go to the South Central ! SPCA. Words cannot express how after watching this how I truly have lost faith in mankind.!!! Shame Shame Shame

This show made me sick especially knowing that people were filiming and did NOTHING to help these animals – especially Jack and Jill. I’m glad Jack got a home but Jill was put down because no one wanted her after 67 days and they just let it happen. I am completely and utterly disgusted with the jackholes who made this and let this happen. Anyone involved with this documentary is completely useless in my eyes!

I cried like a baby for this entire show. I hope to God that someone helped this dog after they finished filming. Which brings me to the point of…how could you have filmed this poor dog and her puppies without helping…not even a hint of food?! I appreciate what this documentary was trying to accomplish but how about lending a hand people!!!!

This program ripped my heart open too. What’s really disgusting is that the city of L.A. is spending stimulus money (our money) on a yacht to take people like Barbara Boxer’s office on tours of the port (?) and then we witness this disgrace. There is no excuse for this. I can’t imagine driving and seeing a puppy running in the middle of the street and not pulling over and saving it. I’ve seen people pull over on the freeway to save dogs. I’m hoping this program will make a difference. I’ve already emailed LA County Animal Services and asked them what’s being done.

Clover for Rover Animal Sanctuary and Rescue………… we run a special needs animal rescue and sanctuary in middle tennessee. probably as far away as you can get from south central in every way, except for the fact that there are homeless animals everywhere. you see them in packs, mothers with pups and poor lost lonely dogs alone, literally everywhere……..we run our rescue from our home farm and help as many as possible, hundreds a year, but it does not even make a dent in the animal war zone we call home. big pocket animal rescue organizations have been spending millions of dollars each year to “educate” the public. but the problem just keeps getting worse, based on the numbers in our area, no one has seen the light………if animal planet aired this documentary to educate people, good luck with that, follow the dogs, make your show and then spend some of the money your very successful networks makes off of animals every day of every year to help these animals, not just elsie……..by the way, we take in un-touchable feral adult dogs and puppies that have had no human interaction and they re-domesticate, every single one. shame on you money hungry greedy animal planet, what a disgrace

I would like to encourage others to write to Discovery Communications, the parent company of Animal Planet, as I did, in order to make them aware of the outrage over this poor excuse for “journalism”:
“I want to express my displeasure and anger at the producers and creators of the documentary “Street Dogs of South Central,” which aired on the Animal Planet Channel on February 11th. While the concept of filming the heartbreaking conditions that exist for these poor creatures for the purpose of documenting their plight might seem to be a good idea on the surface, the reality is that the filmmakers stood by and did not attempt to intervene when these stray dogs were in danger of being severely injured or killed. The sight of the two pit bulls actually being hit by cars was one of the most horrific things that my wife and I have ever seen; the one animal actually sustained a horrendous leg injury that resulted in the amputation of the limb. To allow a living creature to needlessly suffer for “journalism” is asinine, and for Discovery Communications to allow such a program to be aired on one of its networks is unconscionable. When I look back at the type of educational programs that aired on The Learning Channel and The Discovery Channel at the inception of these networks in the 1980′s, and compare them to the sensationalistic, voyeuristic, sadistic, and borderline-idiotic shows that now pass for “intelligent” viewing, I count my blessings that I was once able to benefit from quality television programs that did not diminish my intellect or harden my heart. I will never watch another program on one of your channels, and I intend to pass this information on to as many social and media outlets as I can. Because of television networks like yours, the dystopian dark comedy “Idiocracy” now seems like a prescient documentary of what the future holds for our doomed society. Nice job.”

owian, congrats to u, what an amazing letter, just wish the ones accountable cared enough to read it and someone responsible for this film would step up to the plate and make a comment on why they made this short film if nothing is to arise or change the outcome of south central…. I truely believe if all who found this horrific to please write or somehow let animal planet or the mayor & who ever is involved know how upset they have made all of us animal lovers…..and how can we help out south central? But if the mayor and people of south central don’t give 2 shits about these dogs, no matter how much help they get won’t change the mentality of these people toward these helpless, neglected, starving, unloved dogs.

I emailed a local shelter in the area and was given this link to donate money that will go directly to help the dogs in South Central (I hope). This is the information from the shelter.

People can make tax deductible donation to our Animal Welfare Trust Fund and specify Street Dogs of South LA. That money is restricted for the use the donor specifies. https://anidonation.lacity.org/donation_start.cfm In the “dedicated to” box, write Street Dos of South LA.

If you can donate even a little, it will help.

This is very disturbing. To top it off I have emailed Animal Planet and The Humane Society of the US about how to help these dogs and have heard nothing back. I cannot find any information anywhere, except for information on one rescue which closed after the founder was charged with animal cruelty/neglect. Has anyone found any information on how to help???????

MizzV, I too wanted to contact Animal Planet. First I contacted them to ask how people can help the Street Dogs of South Central and they responded within a week that they could not provide information on the film and that I should search the Internet. Then I left a comment to let them know my disappoint with them and that I would not be watching Animal Planet anymore. I contacted them here at this link (Animal Planet is part of Discovery Communications):
