Dog Saves Orphaned Baby Squirrel

An orphaned baby squirrel was left helpless after falling from a tree in a forest in Inverness, Scotland, and the lucky youngster has a dog to thank for saving him. ‘Squirelly’ is being raised by the Scottish SPCA at their National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross.

His caretakers say the week old red squirrel stood little chance of survival outside of the nest. Fortunately, a compassionate canine found the stranded animal. An area dog owner was surprised when his pet returned from a walk with the unexpected find: the caring dog had gently carried the young rodent all the way home in its mouth.

Center manager Colin Seddon said, “Squirelly really struggled when he first came in but he is now feeding well. He’s being syringe-fed every two to three hours, between 6am and 11pm, and he’ll then be moved on to solid food.”

“Soon we’ll be keeping handling to a minimum to ensure he doesn’t become tame. Squirrelly will stay with us until he’s about ten weeks old and he’ll then be released back into the wild.”

A Cocker Spaniel I had did that once. she found a baby squirrel and brought it to me. I fed it and then found a woman that raised baby squirrels that had lost their mothers and she took care of it. It is a lot of work just like any baby.

OMG, that would’ve been my Chelsea. She was so sweet and gentle. She loved carrying wild bunnies around in her mouth, lol. Got dive-bombed more than once by angry parents while attempting to carry fledglings too, lol. What a great story and amazing doggy. Glad the squirrel is doing well.

  19. I love how their ‘mothering instincts’ kick in when they see anyone or anything wounded. Humans are definitely NOT the superior species.

  20. I love the UK!

  21. All dogs are the best!!!!!!

Joni, the best dog ever, use to help me when I was raising wild animal babies. One time she woke me up because the flying squirrell got out. Took me to the kitchen and pointed to the top of the frig. There it was. Another time when I was feeding a very stunted squirrel every hour, 24 hours a day, I was sleeping thru the alarm clock. She woke me up at 3:00 am, pulled me to the refrig. I got the milk, heated it and went to the bathroom to feed the little guy. When I finished, Joni was asleep on the rug by the couch. I slept on the couch when I was feeding 24 hrs a day. She was the most intuitive dog I have ever seen.

  23. AWWWWwwwwwwwwwww

My pit, Bandit, led me to a fallen limb with a birds nest once. There was a baby bird there and I nursed it back to health. Every morning Bandit would have to check on the baby. It was too cute!

Pamela F. S. — Right there with you. Wish my dogs would do the same but both have a passion for the squirrels (and not in a good way!) Such a sweet story!

  34. Our old golden retriever used to gently carry around the toad that lived in the swamp cooler. I think he thought they were friends. No doubt the toad felt differently…

  35. Awww! What’s the doggie’s name? Good job! Extra treats fir the next 2 months!

  42. When my Pitt mix got pregnant by my beagle (isn’t that funny?!), everyone told me to keep the beagle away from the pups because male beagles were aggressive toward pups. I took him to meet them when they were 3 weeks. From that day on, he had to go see them as soon as he got up every morning. And, all day long as well. He was a great doggy dad. Oh, not to mention that when angel was in labor, he stuck by her side and even brought her little mouthfuls of food. :-)

  43. I found some baby squirrels and alot of people said “why waste your time”? I took them to the vet and one of the girls raised them until they were big enough to be released. I could have never left them alone, they were only a couple of days old.

The dog maternal instinct is great. My mums jack russell would get herself all worked up when my Bother *who was a baby at the time* would cry. Honey would sit there licking his feet whimpering and shaking and howling trying to nurse him so he would stop, Naturally mum had to sort him out but honey thought she could do a better job. Animals are beautiful creatures. <3

I’m just wondering how they knew with certainty the squirrel fell from a nest and was orphaned. That dog could have told them anything. lol

What a beautiful story. Poor little squirrel for the fall (and poor mother/parents losing their little one). But blessings to the dear dog who brought the baby home to treat. Yes, I agree with one of the facebook replies, that the dog should have his/her photo featured also. :o)

Beautiful story, and I hope when released, the squirrel will find it’s original family. :O)

  57. Years ago I had a labrador with three succelling pups. One morning I counted four…….one was a baby rabbit.

Im impressed! My little cooper, a lab mix brought a baby baby bunny to the door tonight and we got him to let go and put the little fella back in his nest. He was totally fine, even after being carried about 100 ft in coops mouth :)

@Amy Rubinate, Golden Retrievers apparently have a very soft palate and can carry a raw egg without cracking it!
I have a 7 year old Golden Retriever and she likes to catch moles in the yard and carry them around in her mouth. Doesn’t kill them though! (Knock-on-wood!) She drops it though when I tell her to! My other dog is a Fox/Coonhound Mix and she will kill ANYTHING! :)

  63. Bless his doggy guardian angel!
