On April 2, 2014, 62-year-old Lucila C. Tellez from Surprise, Ariz., was placed into custody and charged with animal cruelty after Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies found an emaciated adult female dog on her property.

The neglected animal was rescued and evaluated by a veterinarian who found the dog suffering from an acute case of dermatitis over most of her body, tick fever and edema.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio released a statement saying “this abuse in this case is disturbing. The suspect who neglected this dog will have to answer for her cruelty.”

The emaciated dog is under the care of the sheriff’s MASH Unit and will be available for adoption once the animal abuse case is settled and the pet is nursed back to health.
