Police in Lowell, AR, have arrested a man after receiving reports that he killed a dog with a dumbbell and left its body in a dumpster.

Charles James Dugan, 20, was being held at the Benton County Jail on suspicion of felony aggravated cruelty to animals after being notified of the alleged incident by a woman who’d heard about it.

Police searched the dumpster, which is located in a trailer park, and found a bloody pillow, piece of carpet and ball cap. Upon further investigation, the body of the dog was discovered wrapped in an orange sheet.

Information gleaned from neighbors and witnesses led investigators to Dugan’s new address at a Fayetteville apartment community. One of them said he spoke with Dugan after hearing about the alleged dog killing. He reported that Dugan, seated in a rocking chair with a knife in his hand, said the dog had been put down in the back bedroom. The witness also reported seeing blood and hair.

“If someone would do this to an animal, there’s no telling what they’d do,” one officer told reporters at Fox5. “So we’d rather investigate and determine what happened and what needs to be done.”

Officers were told Dugan had the dog for about nine months and the animal had belonged to a friend who had passed away, according to the report.

After executing a search warrant, police found a 30-pound dumbbell in the bedroom and blood splatter on the ceiling and walls, the report states. They also found the area where a piece of carpet had been removed.
