Gilbert’s time was nearly up. The one-year-old pit bull, found as a stray, was scheduled to be euthanized at the Georgia animal shelter where he’d been deposited. His disability, believed to have been caused by being hit by a car, was an impediment to his adoption, they believed.

Lucky Gilbert, however, found an angel in Janine Guido, founder of Speranza Animal Rescue, a nonprofit all the way up in Pennsylvania.

“I was contacted from a shelter director regarding Gilbert,” Guido told ABC27. “She knew I’m a sucker for special-needs dogs.”

As a result, he’s getting a second chance at life, and mobility, via some snazzy, new wheels. He’s rolling and ready for whatever comes next.

“It’s really cute. I want to put little flames on it,” Guido said.

A diaper is necessary for Gilbert, who doesn’t have control of his bladder, though he will be seeing a neurologist soon to determine if his condition is temporary or permanent. In the interim, cold-laser therapy is being employed. Those treating him say its been quite effective in treating spinal cord injuries and that Gilbert has already regained some of the feeling in his back legs.

“That’s why we do what we do to give the hopeless a chance,” Guido said of her rescue’s mission.
