Dog rescue knows no borders, and so when a team from the Ontario, Canada-based Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary headed south to Miami, FL, to give hope to the most hopeless of inmates, they found many a candidate for salvation.
One of them was Lucy. They met her on the day she was to be euthanized. Her eyes were vacant. She was skinny beyond belief. And she was covered in fleas and ticks.

“She was in horrific condition,” Clare Forndran of Dog Tales, told The Dodo. “But Rob (Scheinberg, the rescue team’s leader) could tell that Lucy was a fighter and wasn’t ready to give up. He agreed to take her on the spot.”
Lucy, she adds, suffered from “every health problem you can think of.”
They agreed to take her on the spot but sadly, she was too sick to come to Canada right away. She spent months awaiting adoption, in fact, battling a host of ailments: hookworm, whipworm, heartworm, demodex, anemia … even a kind of cancer called thyroid carcinoma.
But months in rescue made her stronger, healthier and full of hope and when Jamie Ferris and Robyn Hodgkin took her home, she was as ready as she could possibly be for a loving forever family.
It was this beautiful photo of Lucy — smiling, healthy, happy — that called to them.

“I never normally read the stories when I see the horrible pics,” Hodgkin said. “But there was something about her that made me want to adopt her.”
Today, Lucy has fully embraced her new life. No longer a Miami girl, she’s gone “full Canadian.”
“To see Lucy now is such a beautiful reminder of why we wake up every day and do what we do,” Forndran says.
