Running from October 1 to January 2, 2017, this year marks the 18th annual Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive.  Founded by the President & CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center, Mike Arms, this year’s goal is to exceed 2016’s 1.3 million pets who found forever homes in conjunction with more than 4,000 pet adoption agencies in 26 countries and all 50 of the United States.

This program has become the largest pet adoption drive on record.  Since its inception in 1999, over 12 million pets have found new homes.  According to the Humane Society of the U.S., over 29 million people will look to get a pet in the next year and “If fewer than 10 percent of them—just 2.4 million—choose to adopt, we will save all the dogs and cats who currently enter shelters but don’t find homes!”

In a recent press release, Arms stated, “We started Home 4 the Holidays to save lives and raise awareness about the joys of adoption during the season when more families bring a new pet into the home than any other time of year. Together with our national partner Blue Buffalo, we are encouraging families to visit their local rescue group or pet adoption center to give an orphan pet a chance.”
